individual skill development
lab. While here, you will
acquire the skills necessary
to make you a more
successful student in your
subject area.

• We also offer you a quiet
and structured environment
that helps you practice the
concepts you are learning in
class.
• Instructors and instructional
assistants are available to
answer your questions
Orientation
• All students must attend the Week 1 Orientation
• If students do not attend orientation, they will be
dropped

• Students must stay for the full 50 minutes of
orientation

• Students must arrive at orientation on time or
they will have to attend the next available
orientation

What are the ESL
Weekly Arranged Lab Hours?

If you visit outside of these hours
your time will not be counted towards your
weekly time requirement.
WARNING!
Students cannot
attend WALH during
the time they are
enrolled in any
other course in the
NOCCCD*
(even if that course is
cancelled for the day)

You must attend the
WALH for one hour
(50 minutes minimum)
EVERY week.
49 minutes is equal
to an absence.

*Includes School of Continuing Education courses
and classes at Cypress College.
What do I need when I use
the Skills Center?
1. Your Student Network Account
(student ID number & password)

2. Your Student ID card

3. Your Lab Assignment Sheet
A list of assignments & activities you need to
work on while in the Skills Center.

4. Your Material Check-out Card
(Available at the front counter)

5. Printing account (Purchased at Bookstore)
To start: Scan in
and select your class

Scan the
barcode on
your ID
under the
scanner.
(You will hear
one beep)

Select your class from the list by
touching it on the screen.

NOTE - IF YOU DO NOT SCAN IN CORRECTLY YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE CREDIT!!!
Check in: Present your
Material Check-out Card
• Fill out required
information on
the front of the
Material Checkout Card.
• Hand your
Material Checkout Card to the
aide at the
counter.
• Ask for the
materials you
need.

You will be
ASSIGNED a seat.
Please remain in the
carrel assigned to
you and inform staff
if you need to change
seats.

How Do I Use the
Lab Assignment Sheet?
1. Choose the skill
you want to work on.
2. Identify your goal.
3. Select material to
work on.
4. Read the complete
assignment before
starting your work.
5. Ask the lab instructor
if you need help.
How do I get credit for my work?
• Complete one of the
three color coded weekly
assignments in the WALH
packet each week.

• When you complete each
assignment, it is your
responsibility to show
your work to the lab
instructor.
• The instructor will give
you a different colored
stamp for each week.

Your work in the lab counts as
5% of your class grade.

• The instructor will also
initial your work.
Log On to the Computer

Log on using your student ID number
as the Username

2.

Put in your network password
• New students - your six digit birthday.
For example June 7, 1975 would be: 060775
• Returning Students – the same password as last
semester

Once you log on, you may change
your password.

See an Instructional Assistant if you have trouble changing your password.
Where do I find ESL Materials
on the Computer?
Computer Programs – click on the
ESL Resources folder & select the folder
you will be working in for skills practice.

Listening Activities – click on the
ESL Audio Files folder for textbooks that
have listening practice.

What does a Lab Instructor do?
• Help you on any assignment or answer
general questions.
• Explain any grammar point, reading
assignment, vocabulary activity, writing
prompt to you.
• Keep you on task.

• Verify you have completed your
assignment.
Follow the Rules
Do not write in Skills Center materials or remove any
materials from the Center.
Be courteous to other lab users:
No cell phone use. Turn off or mute your phone.
No texting while in lab
No food or drink allowed in the Center.
No study groups or loud talking.
No guests.
You are not allowed to:
Use Facebook, Twitter or other social networking sites
Surf the Internet
Type your homework assignments
Check e-mail
Failure to comply with these rules may result in a loss of computer privileges.
How do I print something?
Printing costs $0.05 per page and
MUST be purchased in the
FC Bookstore, Building 2000
Keep your receipt from the bookstore. If there
is a problem with printing, lab personnel will
ask you for the receipt.

You must purchase a
printing account for this class!

work and get a

Log off the
computer
• Click on the
Office Button
(at the bottom left of your
screen)

• Click on Log Off

Return your Carrel Cards and
retrieve your Material Check-out Card
A Lab Aide will return your Material Check-out Card at the front desk.

When finished, return the
Carrel Cards and materials
to the counter.

sure it is your

Scan out
Scan your ID only
If you do NOT scan out, you will
receive ZERO minutes for the
time you spent in the lab.

You may receive credit for a maximum of 50 minutes per week, per class.
Additional time does NOT roll over to another week.
Check out, Step 5:
Check your lab time
Your accumulated time
for the current visit will
appear on the screen.
If you attended the
WALH at the same time
as an NOCCCD class in
which you are enrolled,
the minutes will be
deducted later.

IF THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH YOUR MINUTES,
LET SKILLS CENTER STAFF KNOW IMMEDIATELY.

  • 22. Check out, Step 4: Scan out Scan your ID only If you do NOT scan out, you will receive ZERO minutes for the time you spent in the lab. You may receive credit for a maximum of 50 minutes per week, per class. Additional time does NOT roll over to another week.
  • 23. Check out, Step 5: Check your lab time Your accumulated time for the current visit will appear on the screen. If you attended the WALH at the same time as an NOCCCD class in which you are enrolled, the minutes will be deducted later. IF THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH YOUR MINUTES, LET SKILLS CENTER STAFF KNOW IMMEDIATELY.
  • 24. Non-Credit Lab Enrollment Please make sure to click on the Yes, By Instructor box on your screen. This message will appear until you select Yes. By selecting this box, you are agreeing to enroll in a noncredit lab course that will allow you to work in the Skills Center. This free course will not affect your GPA, but will show up on your transcripts.
