Le projet Ara sera disponible en beta en janvier 2015 à

Hier se tenait la première conférence autour du projet Ara de Google, le fameux smartphone modulaire développé au
sein du Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) qui appartenait à Motorola Mobility.

Pour l’instant aucun modèle fonctionnel n’a été montré,
mais cela devrait être le cas au cours des deux prochaines
conférences programmées en juillet et septembre.
Cependant Google a lâché des infos sur ce projet Ara,
qui sera finalement disponible en janvier 2015 dans une
version beta. L’endoSquelette (trois tailles différentes
entre 3 et 6 pouces seront disponibles), pièce centrale du
projet, devrait être commercialisée à partir de 50$ (cela
comprend l’écran), le reste des pièces sera en vente dans
uneboutiquetypePlayStoreetlespersonnalisationsseront
très nombreuses aussi bien au niveau des composants
(APN, batterie, mémoire, processeur, capteurs…) que de
leur « design » (couleurs, matière…) ! Pour un smartphone
haut de gamme entièrement personnalisé, il faudra donc
compter environ 500$.

Will Wearable Technology Be The Next Office Tool?

There was little argument among the experts in Las Vegas this past January about who – or rather what – was the scene-
stealer at the annual Consumer Electronics Show. It was all about the wearables.
This year’s CES conference was “the real inflection point for wearable devices,” John Curran, a communications and tech
consultant, told the Financial Times. “It’s about these devices moving from niche applications and early adopters into much
more mainstream products.”
Wearable computers include a variety of devices, from eyewear such as Google Glass to smartwatches such as the Samsung
Gear. In general, though, wearables are defined as miniature electronic devices that are worn somewhere on a user’s body
and enable users to more tightly integrate computing experiences
into everyday life.
That makes sense when you think about a runner being able to look
down at her smartwatch to find a new route or check her pulse, but
what does this look like in a business? Companies–and IT depart-
ments–are just starting to figure that out.
The promise of these devices will start to be seen in businesses in
2014,” said JP Gownder, a Forrester Research analyst who follows
wearable computers. “Enterprises need to start putting together a
road map for thinking about how wearables can improve their busi-
nesses.”

CarPlay s’intègre chez Alpine et Pioneer

CarPlay, le système d’affichage et d’optimisation d’applications iOS d’Apple dans les écrans des tableaux de bord, ne va pas
se limiter à une poignée de véhicules neufs – et hors de prix, les premières voitures équipés CarPlay cette année devant
sortir des lignes de production de Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz ou Volvo.

Les possesseurs de véhicules plus anciens ne seront pas laissés sur
le bord de la route. Deux constructeurs de consoles de voitures ont
annoncé le support de CarPlay dans certaines gammes de leurs
produits.
Chez Alpine, on annonce officiellement l’intégration de CarPlay dans plusieurs
unités du catalogue, avant la fin de l’année. Le fabricant n’annonce aucun tarif,
et n’indique pas non plus si certains systèmes déjà sortis pourront bénéficier du
support de la plateforme intégrée d’Apple.
On se fait plus précis du côté de Pioneer, en annonçant une mise à jour du firm-
ware pour les consoles AVIC-F60DAB, AVIC-F960DAB, AVIC-F960BT, AVIC-
F860BT et AVH-X8600BT. Déjà disponibles dans le commerce, ces stations
multimédia sont équipées d’un écran LCD tactile. Leurs prix varient de 679 à
1.190 euros; la mise à jour sera disponible cet été.

DARPA is turning drones into wireless hotspots

Google and Facebook aren’t the only ones trying to beam down connectivity from the sky: DARPA, the US Defense
Department’s advanced research agency, is trying to turn drones into hotspots for high-speed wireless networks, and
it recently completed an initial testing and development phase on the program working toward that goal. The major
developments were in the creation of steerable antennas and efficient radio amplifiers for the hotspots. DARPA also
created a housing for the hotspots, which will eventually be mounted on drones that have traditionally been used for
surveillance.
DARPA’s hope is to have the hotspot’s communication speeds rival those of a 4G cell network, eventually allowing the
drones to easily extend connectivity into remote locations where the military may be otherwise unable to access intel-
ligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance data. The hotspot program began back in 2012, and it just started its second
phase last month, in which it will begin to integrate the wireless radios onto ground vehicles. The hotspots will eventually
be tested on a network of multiple drones in the third and final phase.
Though it’s not stated how the hotspots are currently communicating, DARPA stated back in 2012 that it expects to take
advantage of commercial technologies, such as Wi-Fi, WiMax, or LTE. The hotspots will be compatible with military pro-
tocols too, however. “We’re pleased with the technical achievements we’ve seen so far,” DARPA program manager Dick
Ridgway says in a statement, referring to the program’s work on antennas and amplifiers. Though DARPA clearly has a far
different goal than Google and Facebook, their similar ideas suggest that this type of project could become an increasingly
easy one to get off the ground.

Cups App : For $45 Per Month, All the Coffee You Can

New York caffeine junkies, look alive: A new app called CUPS allows subscribers to pay $45 per month for unlimited
coffee from almost 40 independent coffee shops around the city.

Designed by a small team from Israel, the app is intended
as an alternative to the smartphone loyalty cards offered
by the likes of Starbucks (SBUX). “It’s a similar service,” says
Gilad Rotem, a co-founder of the startup, which is also
called CUPS. “We’re offering a mobile app, prepaid plan,
but it’s for independent, higher-quality coffee.”
New Yorkers will pay $45 a month for brewed, drip, pour-
over, or filtered coffee (or tea). Latte drinkers will pay more:
The unlimited espresso subscription costs $85 a month.
Rotem says the prices are equivalent to about 22 cups, or
roughly one java beverage per workday per month. On
average, Americans consume 1.7 cups of coffee a day,
according to Studylogic, which means a CUPS subscription
may not be a bad deal.

annoying contracts, memos, and receipts. All of which can be scanned instantly and uploaded directly to Dropbox, Evernote,
and more with Scanbot.
This app isn’t the first of its kind, but its one of the simplest. Simply point your camera at a document and it will scan it, and
do some automatic perspective correction. From there you can upload it to a number of cloud services, including Dropbox,
Evernote, Box, Google Drive, and OneDrive.

This Google App Lets You Control Your Computer From
Your Phone

Remote desktops are nothing new, but Google has now released a slick app that makes the process a pleasure rather
than wildly frustrating. The new software will let you control your Mac or PC from any Android device.
Gizmodo
Chrome Remote Desktop app for Android—snappy!—is an
extension of existing Google software that allows to control your
desktop remotely from within Chrome. But this is way more useful
for those on the go. Getting it working is simple enough: download
the helper app for your computer from the Chrome Web Store (XP
and up, OS X 10.6 and above, and Linux, too) and install the remote
desktop app on your Android from Google Play. Then, you should
be able to open the app and connect to any of your computers and
do, well, whatever you need to do.

Often, with websites, the contact page is one of the most
neglected pages on the site. Once everything else has
been designed it’s pretty easy to just put up a contact page
with an email address on it and let the user do the rest
of the work, but that’s an approach that lacks elegance.
Good contact pages solve a purpose – they guide the
user to contact the correct department and give the right
information. In the case of freelance designers and small
design shops, contact pages can aim to coax information
like what sort of budget range the visitor has, what sort of
work they want doing and the scope of their project. Of
course, design agencies also need to make sure the page
is also visually appealing, as it helps to show off the work
they can do.

Website Designs that are People-friendly are Google-
friendly
-Google has always had the goal of making sure that their search engine provides the most relevant results to searchers.
Through the use of algorithms, Google determines how related a site is when an Internet user completes a search for a
certain keyword or keyword phrase. Recently, though, Google has made some very drastic changes to its algorithms. These
updates have left many unaware website owners wondering how to make their sites appear on Google searches.
Interestingly enough, these changes actually help website designers and developers. As a designer or developer, hopefully
you know about adding keywords to meta data within a website design. Even though many are crying “SEO is dead”, this is
only partly true. What is dead are non-organic methods of link building. Websites still need to optimize their designs with
keywords in meta data simply as a way to help Google better know what a website offers. However, now, as Andrew Smith
in his article on Usabilla points out, the website design, the content as a whole, and social media activity now all have very
large parts to play in Google algorithms. In other words, usability is key in creating a Google approved website.
Websites need to have designs that are built for those who are interested in their content – their target audience in market-
ing terms. Designers need to have a clear picture of their client’s target market and know what appeals to this market, what
is the trend, and how to create a design that Google can easily crawl.

Le principe est simple, les utilisateurs entrent au sein de
cet espace et font face à un miroir d’essayages virtuels
avec lequel ils peuvent interagir via la technologie de
reconnaissance des mouvements Kinect.
Comme avec les autres dispositifs de ce genre, le système
permet de superposer sur l’image de l’utilisateur des
éléments additionnels comme des tenues portées par la
célèbre poupée.

Facebook wants you sharing your location, too.

The social network on Thursday announced Nearby
Friends, a new feature built into Facebook’s mobile app
that allows you to see which of your friends are close by,
and even share your exact location with others.
The new feature uses the geolocation technology in your
smart phone to determine when you are close to one of
your Facebook friends. When activated, the feature will
send periodic notifications alerting you to friends who are
nearby. Users have been able to check in on Facebook for
some time, meaning you can already share your location as
part of a post, but Nearby Friends allows you to broadcast
your general location to Facebook friends without posting
at all.

Thales Group has unveiled its Immersive Business Class Seat, an airline seating concept that uses NFC to enable
passengers to use their mobile phone to set their comfort and entertainment preferences before boarding.

“The NFC technology we use in the concept seat is used
to transmit seat preference from the passengers’ mobile
phone to the seat,” Thales explained to NFC World.
“Essentially, the passenger would be able to choose the
seat configuration, entertainment selection and services
directly on their mobile phone prior to boarding.
“They would then board the plane, place their NFC-
enabled devices on the seat receptor and the seat would
recognise them and introduce their saved settings. It
would also save the settings for the return journey or the
next time the passenger travelled on one of the seats, by
offering to continue movies or entertainment at the point
they had previously stopped.”

Checkpoint Partners With Mojix to Offer Passive RTLS in
Stores

In response to retailer customers seeking real-time RFID
solutions to free employees from having to conduct audits
via handheld readers, Checkpoint Systems is partnering
with passive real-time location system (RTLS) technology
provider Mojix to offer a “hands-free” RFID system using
Checkpoint’s software and Mojix’s OmniSense RFID reader
hardware. The two companies announced their global
partnership at the RFID Journal LIVE! 2014 conference and
exhibition, held last week in Orlando, Fla.
For much of its history, Checkpoint Systems focused on
providing electronic article surveillance (EAS) stickers and
hard tags that retailers attach to merchandise, as well as
the antennas that detect those stickers and tags. In recent
years, however, demand has been growing not only
for Checkpoint’s EAS products and services, but also for
RFID technology, says Alan Sherman, Checkpoint’s senior
director of global marketing for merchandise visibility and
RFID.

7 Ways to Use N.F.C. at Your Event

From digital ticketing to cashless payments, planners are turning to N.F.C. for a variety of applications at their events.
Near field communication, or N.F.C., is one of the hottest topics when it comes to wireless communication. It allows
smartphones to communicate with readers and other N.F.C. devices across a short range of no more than a few inches
and has application for mobile payments, lead retrieval, social media strategy, and more. Research firm I.H.S. Technology
predicts the number of phones equipped with N.F.C. technology will surge in the next few years, reaching 1.2 billion units by
2018.
N.F.C. was one of several communication systems explored at RFID Journal Live, a conference and trade show held April 8
to 10 at the Orange County Convention Center. Anthony Palermo, co-founder of consulting and engineering firm Connect
& Go, shares these examples of how his company is incorporating N.F.C. tags into wristbands used at conferences, concerts,
promotional events, and other large-scale experiences.
1. Access Control
Place N.F.C. readers at the doors to your event to digitally track guests as they enter and exit, eliminating the need for
guests to show a paper ticket or an email with a bar code. As a tag is scanned, it also stores a time stamp so planners can
understand when people arrived and departed. That data can be even more specific if the tag is associated with the guest’s
demographic information, for example to sort arrival times by age. “It’s all the things we think we know, but when we have
this data, it starts to make it concrete, and we can use it to make decisions,” Palermo says. “Let’s say if your sponsor is specific
to an older demographic, you can say, ‘I’m only going to advertise your stuff between this hour and this hour because that’s
when you are going to get the biggest bang for the buck.’” Unlike non-digital wristbands, N.F.C. bands also can reduce fraud
since they cannot be reused by multiple guests.
