Hey, it’s Sharyn Sheldon here from Content Sparks and in this video I’m going to help you decide what type of membership site to create.
Membership sites – everyone seems to want to create one!
Why? Because they’re one of the best ways to earn predictable, recurring income – often with little maintenance once it’s set up.
But what type of site should YOU create?
Creating a successful membership site is all about identifying a solution-based topic that you know there’s an paying audience for.
If you’re already considering creating a membership site, there’s a good chance you have a topic in mind. If not, here are a few of the most popular examples to inspire you.
Create a membership site based around an online course that covers a topic you already know well.
Think about where your expertise lies.
Are you sitting on a wealth of knowledge that a group of people are crying out to learn? Think about how that might translate to a course in which you instruct your members step-by-step how to do what you do, or know what you know.
Now, find the right platform to host your online course membership site.
Platforms like Teachable or Thinkific are fantastic for online learning as they’re really easy to use from both back and front end perspectives.
Publish and broadcast your online course membership site
Where are the people whose problem you’re solving? Find out where they are, and take your course to them.
Use all the different marketing methods available to you, depending on your budget, to get your course visible.
Jessica Sprague’s Digital scrapbook series of courses is one of the top recommended on Teachable.
She’s identified a significant niche and used her skills in Photoshop to teach others how to accomplish something incredibly beautiful and creative. She’s also written her course in such a way that she can lead on to different parts, generating further income.
An information library offers the member access to a wealth of information and resources on a particular topic
Determine the potential success of an information library website by first identifying a problem, like before, that people want solved.
Depending on how many people are looking for this information, and what other sources there are that provide it, you can estimate how popular your information library might be
You’re going to need lots of content.
If you’re offering a service of access to content related to a topic, you need to deliver lots of quality information.
Consistently produce new content to keep people engaged.
Most information library sites run on a recurring payment model. That means you’ll need to add new information and content to keep your members engaged and happy. Make sure it’s all top quality so that they keep coming back.
DigitalMarketer Lab is the membership site for digital marketers. They know their stuff when it comes to marketing online, and they’ve used that knowledge to put together a huge bank of step-by-step guides, resources, and training materials for their members.
A community membership site offers access to an exclusive group.
Community memberships sites are a little harder to get established than the online course or information library models.
They’re most successful when associated with an established brand with an existing group of loyal customers, who will appreciate the feeling of reassurance they’ll get from being a part of a community focused on the same topic.
Communities evolve around interaction.
That means you need to be present as an administrator in your community, and to be human. Use your face, your name, and information about you to allow your members to relate to you as easily as possible.
Think about the features your members will appreciate.
Will they be looking to upload images or video? Will they benefit from being able to chat to one another? Think about what platform and features will best suit them.
Long Exposure Photography was created on Google+. It’s a professional community that allows members to share images, get feedback and network with one another.
