Solar Panels: What to Expect
2. Solar energy is something that we’ll all become familiar with in the
years to come. Solar panels, and other renewable energy sources,
are a revolution. The same way that the discovery of electricity
changed the world, so too will solar energy. In 100 years’ time, all
of us will have PV solar UK. In fact, its reach will be global, and is
perhaps the catalyst that will transform the third and second world
into the first world (if that’s what they want, of course).
3. You don’t need to understand solar panels in order to use them, just
as you don’t need to understand electricity in order to use it. It is
an interesting topic though. This article is for those of you who are
curious about PV solar UK, but who don’t want to delve too deeply
into the topic.
How PV Cells Work
PV stands for photovoltaic – solar panels are made of PV cells. The
terms ‘photovoltaic cells’ and ‘solar panels’ are interchangeable;
although technically, solar panels are made up of multiple PV cells.
4.
5. Solar panels absorb energy from daylight – it doesn’t need to be
direct sunlight, but simply daylight.
This means that they continue to collect energy when it’s overcast
and stormy. As long as you can see without needing a torch or
other source of light, a solar panel will be collecting energy.
They work better when there’s more sunlight. The more sunlight
there is, the greater the amount of electricity they generate. In the
future, they will become so advanced, that we won’t be able to tell
the difference between cloudy and sunny days. For now, there is a
difference, but it’s not as important as you probably assumed.
6. What to Expect With Installation
There are a few things that you need to think about when having solar panels
installed.
You might need to apply for planning permission if you want to place solar
panels on your roof. This is only usually the case with listed buildings, with
buildings where the placement of the solar panels will cause obstructions
to neighbouring properties, or in conservation arias. With listed buildings,
you will probably need planning permission, but they will grant it for most
buildings.
The amount of roof space the panels take up depends on the amount of
electricity you want them to generate. If you want to power most of your
house with solar energy, then it’s likely they’ll take up all of the roof
space. The smallest set up you can buy tend to average 8m2.
7. An average solar panel will last decades. We’re not really sure yet,
because we haven’t reached the point that we’ve found out yet.
However, manufacturers say that they’ll last at least 20 years –
that’s a conservative estimate. Plenty of experts say that, as long as
they’re well maintained, that solar panels can last as much as 50
years! When you think it costs £10000 for a full PV solar UK set up,
that’s only £16 a month for 50 years, and no electric bills!
Installation will take about 2 days – you don’t have to be there
when they install them. Make sure that you choose an installer that
is accredited with the relevant governing body. Otherwise, you
might not be covered if they do something wrong.
