3. Olympics (London)
• The Olympic Games is a major international
event featuring summer and winter sports, in
which thousands of athletes participate in a
variety of competitions. The Olympic Games
have come to be regarded as the world’s
foremost sports competition where more than
200 nations participate.
4. London Olympics
• London was selected as the host city on 6 July
2005 during the 117th IOC Session Session in
Singapore, defeating Moscow, New York City,
Madrid and Paris after four rounds of voting.
The successful bid was headed by former
Olympic champion Sebastian Coe.
5. London Olympics
• The Olympics prompted a redevelopment of
many of the areas of London in which the games
are to be held – particularly themed towards
sustainability. While the budgetary considerations
have generated some criticism, the Games will
make use of many venues which were already in
place before the bid, including Wembley Stadium,
Wembley Arena, Wimbledon All England Club,
Lord's Cricket Ground, The O2 Arena, Earls Court
Exhibition Centre, Weymouth and Portland
National Sailing Academy, and the Excel Centre.
6. Why was London hosted in the
Olympics
• Cities have to bid to host the Olympic Games. At the
deadline for bids for the 2012 games, 9 cities had
submitted their bids. These were: Havana, Istanbul,
Leipzig, London, Madrid, Moscow, New York, Paris and
Rio de Janeiro. It then goes to a second round, to
narrow the field. The IOC reduced the cities to:
London, Madrid, Moscow, New York, and Paris. The
next step is for the IOC to send inspectors to the
candidate cities. After the inspections comes the
evaluation of the reports, and then a vote. At the
voting sessions, Moscow, New York and Madrid were
ruled out, and it came down to a vote between London
and Paris. London won by 54 votes to 50.
7. Opening ceremony for the London
Olympics
• The eyes of the world will be on London on 27
July 2012 for the Opening Ceremony of the
London 2012 Olympic Games. The Ceremony will
mark the beginning of the XXXth Olympiad. It will
provide an opportunity for the world to view the
artistic expression of Danny Boyle and his team,
and the culture of our Host City and the UK.
• There are certain elements that must feature in
every Olympic Games Opening Ceremony, as
outlined in the International Olympic
Committee's (IOC) Olympic Charter:
