William Hill is one of the UK’s largest, most well-established gaming companies with a global presence across 9 countries with over 16,000 employees. In recent years the gaming industry and in particular sports betting, has been revolutionised by technology. Customers now demand a wide range of events and markets to bet on both pre-game and in-play 24/7. This has driven out a business need to process more data, provide more updates and offer more markets and prices in real time. At William Hill, we have invested in a completely new trading platform using Apache Kafka. We process vast quantities of data from a variety of feeds, this data is fed through a variety of odds compilation models, before being piped out to UI apps for use by our trading teams to provide events, markets and pricing data out to various end points across the whole of William Hill. We deal with thousands of sporting events, each with sometimes hundreds of betting markets, each market receiving hundreds of updates. This scales up to vast numbers of messages flowing through our system. We have to process, transform and route that data in real time. Using Apache Kafka, we have built a high throughput, low latency pipeline, based on Cloud hosted Microservices. When we started, we were on a steep learning curve with Kafka, Microservices and associated technologies. This led to fast learnings and fast failings. In this session, we will tell the story of what we built, what went well, what didn’t go so well and what we learnt. This is a story of how a team of developers learnt (and are still learning) how to use Kafka. We hope that you will be able to take away lessons and learnings of how to build a data processing pipeline with Apache Kafka.

In this hands-on workshop, we cover the basics of locking down in-cluster network traffic using the new traffic policies introduced in Linkerd 2.11. Using Linkerd’s ability to authorize traffic based on workload identity, we cover a variety of practical use cases, including restricting access to a critical service, preventing traffic across namespaces, and locking down traffic while still allowing metrics scrapes, health checks, and other meta-traffic.

Consuming messages in parallel is what Apache Kafka® is all about, so you may well wonder, why would we want anything else? It turns out that, in practice, there are a number of situations where Kafka’s partition-level parallelism gets in the way of optimal design. This session will go over some of these types of situations that can benefit from parallel message processing within a single application instance (aka slow consumers or competing consumers), and then introduce the new Parallel Consumer labs project from Confluent, which can improve functionality and massively improve performance in such situations. It will cover the - Different ordering modes of the client - Relative performance improvements - Usage with other components like Kafka Streams - An introduction to the internal architecture of the project - How it can achieve all this in a reassignment friendly manner

Monitoring Apache Kafka When you are running systems in production, clearly you want to make sure they are up and running at all times. But in a distributed system such as Apache Kafka… what does “up and running” even mean? Experienced Apache Kafka users know what is important to monitor, which alerts are critical and how to respond to them. They don’t just collect metrics - they go the extra mile and use additional tools to validate availability and performance on both the Kafka cluster and their entire data pipelines. In this presentation, we’ll discuss best practices of monitoring Apache Kafka. We’ll look at which metrics are critical to alert on, which are useful in troubleshooting and what may actually misleading. We’ll review a few “worst practices” - common mistakes that you should avoid. We’ll then look at what metrics don’t tell you - and how to cover those essential gaps.

Infrastructure-related skills are essential for developers in cross-functional teams who build microservices for the cloud. Becoming proficient in infrastructure development is not just about understanding the hardware and software components on top of which applications run in the cloud. It's also about being able to use the tools that provide virtual access to this infrastructure and enable us to provision, configure, monitor it, and deploy applications to it. In this talk Gesa shares how building a Kubernetes cluster of Raspberry Pis and serving applications from it can help in acquiring fundamental infrastructure skills.

Speakers: Ravi Dubey, Senior Manager, Software Engineering, Capital One + Jeff Sharpe, Software Engineer, Capital One Capital One supports interactions with real-time streaming transactional data using Apache Kafka®. Kafka helps deliver information to internal operation teams and bank tellers to assist with assessing risk and protect customers in a myriad of ways. Inside the bank, Kafka allows Capital One to build a real-time system that takes advantage of modern data and cloud technologies without exposing customers to unnecessary data breaches, or violating privacy regulations. These examples demonstrate how a streaming platform enables Capital One to act on their visions faster and in a more scalable way through the Kafka solution, helping establish Capital One as an innovator in the banking space. Join us for this online talk on lessons learned, best practices and technical patterns of Capital One’s deployment of Apache Kafka. -Find out how Kafka delivers on a 5-second service-level agreement (SLA) for inside branch tellers. -Learn how to combine and host data in-memory and prevent personally identifiable information (PII) violations of in-flight transactions. -Understand how Capital One manages Kafka Docker containers using Kubernetes. PortoTechHub - Hail Hydrate! From Stream to Lake with Apache Pulsar and Friends https://portotechhub.com/conference-2021/ Timothy Spann Developer Advocate StreamNative A cloud data lake that is empty is not useful to anyone. How can you quickly, scalably and reliably fill your cloud data lake with diverse sources of data you already have and new ones you never imagined you needed. Utilizing open source tools from Apache, the FLiP stack enables any data engineer, programmer or analyst to build reusable modules with low or no code. FLiP utilizes Apache NiFi, Apache Pulsar, Apache Flink and MiNiFi agents to load CDC, Logs, REST, XML, Images, PDFs, Documents, Text, semistructured data, unstructured data, structured data and a hundred data sources you could never dream of streaming before. I will teach you how to fish in the deep end of the lake and return a data engineering hero. Let's hope everyone is ready to go from 0 to Petabyte hero. TRACK RIBEIRA Fri 07:00 — 50 min 19-Nov-2021

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
