Jesus suffered and died on the cross to take the punishment for humanity's sins, though he was sinless. He bore our sins and shed his blood so that those who believe in him may be forgiven and made righteous in God's sight. While suffering on the cross, Jesus cried out asking why God had forsaken him, representing the moment he took on the sins of the world.
