Technology Use Plan Created by Steven Poast Graduate Student Boise State University Autumn 2009
RationaleWhy develop a technology plan? We are in charge of preparing our students for the challenges of the 21st century The increasing use of technology in the workforce creates a need to align technology use with curriculum content enabling students to use technology in a variety of situations.
RationaleTeacher / School Impact Teachers need to have strong technology skills so students can benefit Proper technology use can improve efficiency in communication between school and home Provides framework for growth and development  State mandates – many states require that district have a technology plan
Technology Planning Team Technology Coordinator Principal Teacher rep. for Elementary, Middle and High School levels Student rep. for grade levels Parent Advisory member School board member Local Technology Professional
Technology Plan Process Assess student needs and outcomes Assess current technology use and needs* Hardware Software Internet access Training (Faculty/Staff) *Needs assessment tool is used to gain input from faculty and staff in regards to current technology use.
Technology Plan Outline Collect information from faculty, staff, student, and parent assessments Review state and national (ISTE*) standards for technology in schools Compare current use to students’ current and future needs Create Vision Statement Develop objectives which meet the needs of students, faculty/staff and community Assess budget for technology financing Develop evaluation method/process *International Society for Technology in Education
Vision Statement Why have a vision statement? 	A vision statement takes the values of what the organization is trying to accomplish and uses those values to inspire all involved to work towards their goals.
Sample Technology Vision Statement:Bethel School District Eugene, Oregon “Students in the Bethel School District will use technology in an ethical and appropriate manner within a safe and nurturing educational environment. Students will have appropriate access to technological tools that enable them to investigate, analyze, problem solve, create and then present ideas and information to others. The use of technology will help prepare students for the challenges they will confront as adults in the twenty-first century. The infusion of technology must also be a catalyst for changing and improving the way instruction is delivered and the roles in the educational process of both staff and students.” Resource: http://www.bethel.k12.or.us/betheltechplan2006.htm
Technology Plan: Student  Objectives Improve technology skills and usage Apply technology to develop critical thinking skills Assess student use of technology in content areas and document this use Provide a safe and secure environment for students to use technology
Technology Plan Objectives:Administrators, Teachers, Staff Improve skills and usage Increase integration of technology Increase communication with parents, colleagues and community Develop continuous professional development plan with technology focus
Technology Plan Objectives:Community Collect input from parents and community members on technology use and development Communicate goals and objectives of the two to three year plan Provide educational resources to improve parent technology use skills Provide educational resources to improve the community’s technology use skills
Needs Assessment:Faculty and Staff Assessment Instrument  - All assessment will be online Survey Monkey Link: Technology Needs Assessment Link by Survey Monkey
Needs Assessment:Students and Parents Computer Usage Internet accessibility  Use of communication via internet Skill level Conducted online in a similar format to Faculty/Staff survey
Administrator, Teacher and Staff Development Professional Development  Computer fluency Hardware knowledge Networking Internet accessibility Technology/Content integration Teacher Technology Portfolio development
Evaluation/Research Evaluations are  Yearly – to allow for adaptation Constantly changing/evolving  Research driven – following ISTE standards Collected from faculty/staff, students and parents – provide information on developments both at school and home
Technology Plan Timeline 2-3 Year Cycles 0-6 months - Administer needs assessments 6-9 months - Analyze assessments, begin developing objectives 9 months-1year - review technology budget,  1-2 years - Implement professional development plans, integrate technology with content standards 2-3 years - Re-evaluate plan, budget and progress. Develop new goals/objectives as needed.
Time for Change These steps are the beginning of an ongoing process Be Patient The Goal – provide school and community with the 21st century technology skills necessary to compete in a global,  information driven market
