When innovators try to envision how people will use their product they often have different ideas on what people want. Products that are of superior technology may fail and inferior succeed, only because the inferior product has some features that people are looking for. In this lecture we look at how new products or technologies get adopted my markets. We look at the Law of Diffusion of Innovation, which explains how this adoption happens. We also look at what it takes for a new innovation to move from being a visionary idea to a practical product, or crossing the chasm. Finally we explore the hype cycle. In this lecture we look at how innovation happens. We look at the slow hunch, the liquid network, and serendipity.

For the most time of human history, life was local and linear. Local in the way that anything that happened was close by, a least within a walking distance. Linear in the way that your life was the same as your father and your children. Nothing changed. Just like the evolution of man, technology improvements follow an evolutionary progress. New ideas or products are to begin with immature and fragile with slow improvements. Then the progress accelerates until the products become mature and taken for granted. Then the cycle repeats and a new layer of technology is added to the previous. This process is exponential. One such observation of exponential is Moore’s Law. Any new technology that gets wide acceptance in society needs to be adopted by people. We will explore that type of people are the first to adopt new things, and what types come later.

REAL WORLD EXAMPLES OF SOLUTIONS FOR SUSTAINABLE CITIES Cities present a crucial challenge and opportunity in the coming decades, as more than 2.5 billion people are expected to be added to the world's urban areas by 2050. This presentation from Ani Dasgupta, Global Director, WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities, explores real-world examples of how change has been made in some of the fastest growing cities and economies of the world and discuss actions to ensure sustainable urbanization in the years and decades ahead. There is strong evidence that improved economic productivity and resource efficiency that accompany urbanization can be achieved while simultaneously addressing the environmental and social externalities from rapid urban growth. Although a combination of technological, social and political innovation is necessary, a wide range of actionable solutions are currently available to address the challenges cities face across various sectors. 2015-16 is an unprecedented year of opportunity - with COP, SDG and Habitat III - for advancing action at the global and city level towards advancing sustainable urban growth.

From Delaware, Ohio, Clifford "Cliff" Kigar is a graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), located in Troy, New York. Cliff Kigar attended the program while on scholarship, graduating last year in December with a degree in mechanical engineering. In August, the engineering department at RPI announced the launch of the Constellation Prize, recognizing the work of engineers for their contributions to social and environmental justice. The engineering school has been a place where innovation and discovery are appreciated, and this prize recognizes the importance of both in advancing not only the field but also human existence. According to the scholars who organized the prize, engineers hold a lot of power. Much of their discoveries lead to new advances, which usually lead to an improvement in the quality of life. However, the prize seeks to recognize engineers who have expanded the usual scope of engineering to see its potential uses in social and environmental justice. The team who devised the award come from academia and socially-minded engineers, and of course, the two scholars who developed the scholarship. The prize is open to engineers and their teams, and winners do not necessarily have to work in academia either. This year’s nominations were accepted until September 30 with winners to be announced later this fall.

Tactical Urbanism is the small scale- and usually low cost- implementation of urban improvements in the public space. It helps revitalize unused and derelict areas of the city, build community, provide alternative ways of cultural experience. I believe we need more of it. I was inspired by Street Plans Collaborative (streetplans.org/) from USA, David Barrie from UK (davidbarrie.typepad.com/), BMW Guggenheim Lab, and Lithuanian NGO Laimikis.lt. Zowel insiders als outsiders lieten vanuit verschillende perspectieven hun licht op open ruimte schijnen. What if we could evaluate projects, plans and designs using an enhanced concept of sustainability? “For sustainability to occur, it must occur simultaneously in each of its three dimensions” (economic, social and environmental) Larsen, 2012. These three crucial and necessary dimensions of sustainability are, each of them, connected to big traditions of study and analysis that must be integrated. My claim here is that this enhanced concept of sustainability help us derive solid criteria to evaluate plans, project and designs in Urbanism through the idea of Spatial Justice, and to connect this evaluation to larger academic traditions.
