                          Active Volcanoes Around The World
Subject: Science/Geography

Grade level: 6th

Overview: it is important that students learn that volcanoes are an important part of our world.
Their location, which they will see on maps provided, many times determines areas of high and
low population. The land that surrounds volcanoes is typically very fertile, which sometimes
makes that area a peripheral region. Students need to learn to read and understand maps and
differentiate the info provided on the map according to its legend/key.

Objective: students will learn about:

1. Active volcanoes around the world
        -how they are formed
        -most common types of volcanoes (cinder cone, shield, and composite)
        -areas most impacted by volcanoes
        -what effect they have on land, and how it helps/affects humans
2. Active volcanoes in California
        -how volcanoes cause earthquakes
        -how safe are we?
3. The ring of fire

Materials:

       Research about volcanic activity around us.
       Map showing the "Ring of Fire" and other areas with volcanic activity
       Map that shows the volcanoes located in California
       Volcano and Earthquake areas question sheet
Activities
Warm up:

        Begin with a review about volcanoes shapes, explosion types, and volcanic activity.
Central Lesson/Activity:
1. Discuss some facts about volcanism obtained from the USGS.
2. Use of visual aid, either maps or pictures, to support the lecture.
3. Complete the Volcano and Earthquake Areas question sheet.
4. Review California Volcanoes sheet.
Conclusion: students knowledge about volcanic activity will increase. The Volcano and
Earthquake Areas question sheet will be distributed to the students, to give them the opportunity
to review part of the information learned in class.

Evaluation: To ensure that the students assimilated the information it will be important to ask
questions about the lecture and, after they have worked individually on their questions sheet, go
over the answers with them.

4. earthquakes just below the surface and sometimes deep within the earth can shift, slide, or
vibrate under pressure anywhere in the world. Volcanic areas are small areas within the much
larger earthquake areas of the world.
