Presented by Sandro Cirulli, Platform Tech Lead, Oxford University Press Oxford University Press (OUP) recently started the Oxford Global Languages (OGL) initiative (http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/words/oxfordlanguages) which aims at providing language resources for digitally under represented languages. In August 2015 OUP launched two African languages websites for Zulu (http://zu.oxforddictionaries.com) and Northern Sotho (http://nso.oxforddictionaries.com). The backend of these websites is based on an API retrieving data in RDF from a triple store and delivering data to the frontend in JSON-LD. The entire micro-service infrastructure for development, staging, and production runs on Docker containers in Amazon EC2 instances. In particular, we use Jenkins to rebuild the Docker image for the API based on a Python Flask application and Docker Compose to orchestrate the containers. A typical CI workflow is as follows: - a developer commits code to the codebase - Jenkins triggers a job to run unit tests - if the unit tests are successful, the Docker image of the Python Flask application is rebuilt and the container is restarted via Docker Compose - if the unit tests or the Docker build failed, the monitor view shows the Jenkins jobs in red and displays the name of the possible culprit who broke the build. Continuous delivery is a powerful concept, but hard to achieve. One of the challenges is automating the setup of environments and the deployment of the Java EE applications. We have looked at and used quite some tools like for instance Chef, Puppet, Vagrant and Nolio. All tools had one thing in common: we had never used them. Why should we invest time in mastering those tools? There is a perfect alternative in Jenkins, a tool most developers are familiar with. Besides the basic Jenkins buildserver capabilities it offers quite some useful plugins like the Build Pipeline plugin. To setup environments the popular Docker project is used. Docker allows you to create containers from any application. Only some knowledge is required for the setup of the containers. The rest of the configuration is done through commands most people are quite familiar with.

During the company's first four years, their Jenkins setup changed and evolved to the point that it was out of control. Ravello decided to take all the experience from those years and create a new and improved Jenkins setup. This session will share the lessons that were learned the hard way - and explain how the CI process was optimized. The process of re-doing the CI mechanism for a large always developing group will be discussed, as well as mechanisms for revision control in Jenkins, job infrastructure and architecture guidelines for maximal flexibility and reuse and various other considerations. The overall continuous integration and testing strategies - which are completely cloud-based and cover all our varied components (from a hypervisor through networking and storage layers, distributed backend systems and all the way to an HTML5-based UI and a cross platform client side application) - will be described.

Typically, output logs and parameterized build input data such as SCM branches, bug tracking issues and notes entered by the developer are lost once the build has completed. At best, Jenkins keeps this information for a limited time. The only historical reference is, perhaps, in a report. Consequently, this data cannot easily be reused for future builds or reviewed during the auditing process. Using Jenkins, Groovy and Neo4j, this data can persist for the life of a project. This presentation will describe the simple steps taken to save this information for posterity.

The code reproducibility problem is defined as being able to rebuild a binary identical software release for a specific amount of time (up to 15-20 years after initial release) and to rebuild a software application with only small changes, keeping the unchanged parts binary identical with the related release. The problem complexity grows due to: external dependencies in a changing environment, a requirement to perform cross-platform builds, scaling issues (hundreds of gigabytes of source code) and more. The Technisat Dresden team achieved their goals by combining several tools in the right way: Jenkins + custom Jenkins plugin, SaltStack, KVM and SVN/Git.

At Yandex, we’re deploying software environments consisting of many nodes from the cloud and we can leverage existing Jenkins slave management mechanisms - such as scheduling, automated provisioning and load-balancing - via this single-slave abstraction. By Sarah Woodall, NXP Semiconductors LPCXpresso is a multi-platform IDE for developers of embedded software to run on NXP Semiconductor's ARM-based microcontrollers. NXP needs to test that the debugger can execute programs on numerous different development boards that connect to the USB ports of host computers. Besides building a complex software product, the Jenkins installation drives an automated test farm consisting of home-built software-controlled USB switches ("cows") that control a huge array of combinations of test board, debug probe and host platform. This talk will give a tour of the NXP farm, including video of the cows in action, and will describe the features of Jenkins that are used to make it work, with particular emphasis on dynamic selection of combinations within matrix jobs, parameterized triggers and the Summary Display plugin. Finally, plans to migrate to the new Workflow plugin will be discussed. NXP believes the Workflow plugin will simplify the structure and make it more maintainable.

As a middleware technology, Camunda integrates with six different Java application servers (in different versions) and supports six different database products. The team at Camunda maintains five supported versions of Camunda itself, adding two versions every year. Maintaining the necessary continuous integration (CI) infrastructure based on virtual machines became increasingly problematic, with poor build reproducibility and limited scalability. Feedback cycles for developers were unacceptable. Recently Camunda switched from the virtual machine model to a container model based on Docker. The Camunda team now develops infrastructure as code and applies microservice-like separation of concerns. In the talk, Daniel will share the new CI architecture and present lessons learned.

The term "artificial intelligence" was first coined by John McCarthy in 1956 to describe efforts to develop computer programs capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. This concept was first introduced at a conference held at Dartmouth College, where programs demonstrated capabilities such as playing chess, proving theorems, and interpreting texts. In the early stages, Alan Turing contributed to the field by defining intelligence as the ability of a being to respond to certain questions intelligently, proposing what is now known as the Turing Test to evaluate the presence of intelligent behavior in machines. As the decades progressed, AI evolved significantly. The 1980s focused on machine learning, teaching computers to learn from data, leading to the development of models that could improve their performance based on their experiences. The 1990s and 2000s saw further advances in algorithms and computational power, which allowed for more sophisticated data analysis techniques, including data mining. By the 2010s, the proliferation of big data and the refinement of deep learning techniques enabled AI to become mainstream. Notable milestones included the success of Google's AlphaGo and advancements in autonomous vehicles by companies like Tesla and Waymo. A major theme of the presentation is the application of generative AI, which has been used for tasks such as natural language text generation, translation, and question answering. Generative AI uses large datasets to train models that can then produce new, coherent pieces of text or other media. The presentation also discusses the ethical implications and the need for regulation in AI, highlighting issues such as privacy, bias, and the potential for misuse. These concerns have prompted calls for comprehensive regulations to ensure the safe and equitable use of AI technologies. Artificial intelligence has also played a significant role in healthcare, particularly highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic, where it was used in drug discovery, vaccine development, and analyzing the spread of the virus. The capabilities of AI in healthcare are vast, ranging from medical diagnostics to personalized medicine, demonstrating the technology's potential to revolutionize fields beyond just technical or consumer applications. Principled Technologies

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
