media players
CES 2010: Korean tech giant jumps the CES gun
before someone else does it for them By Dan Sung
With the gears of CES 2010 beginning to grind into action, Samsung has announced
two media players for the world to enjoy. The more straight forward is the 16GB
Samsung IceTouch (YP-H1) with its transparent 2-inch AMOLED touchscreen of
tempered glass and original TouchWiz Sweep interface.
It offers "studio-quality" 5.1 channel sound and DVD resolution video playback -
albeit on something the size of a postage stamp. It also happens to analyse and
tweak the audio output to make sure it's playing you the tunes as the producer
intended.
2. The IceTouch comes in white - unless you wish to shell out for the pink, blue, purple
and grey skins - and it supports MP3, WMA, OGG, FLAC, AAC, M4A, WAV and
MP3HD audio codecs, and MPEG4, WMV, H.264, Xvid and DivX files on the video
side of things.
The second of the Korean company's early announcements is the 8GB MyFit (YP-
W1) designed to promote "wellness". At its most basic, it's a media player with an FM
radio which will play MP3, WMA, OGG, and AAC, as well as MPEG4 and WMV video
formats. Where it specialises, though, is by acting as a jogging companion with an
easy tap UI, a calorie burn counter, the world's first stress and fat sensors and even
water intake indicators and a smoking cessation utility as well.
It might all come a little late for those starting their New Year's fitness regimes now
but both players can be expected in the first half of 2010.
