• Increasing Pressure from European society to improve the
environmental performance of aviation
• reduction of fuel consumption and gaseous
emission (ACARE Vision 2020)
• European research initiatives – CLEAN SKY
– ‐30% fuel consumption
– ‐40% CO2
– ‐53% NOx
• Those reductions are not achievable by Turbine engines
• Substitution of Turbine engine by Diesel Engine Technology 2

12. GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
• Demonstrate significant fuel burn and
associated Direct Operating Costs savings
• Demonstrate strong reduction of pollutants
compared to turbo shaft:
– ‐30% CO2
– ‐30% fuel consumption
• Minimize the Diesel engine weight impacts to
maintain useful load as far as possible

• Damp vibration levels of engine (torque modulation,
structure vibrations)
• Adapt engine cooling , transmission and
controls for helicopter
• Achieve high power to weight ratios of complete
Diesel engine with good reliability
• Maintain low acquisition cost of piston engines in
aeronautical environment
