It is with great pleasure that I write to you on behalf of Clarence B. Rivette.
Clarence attended New York University's Gallatin School of Individualized Study and
During the academic year 2007-08 enrolled in two courses I teach, Songwriting and
Playing Jazz. At Gallatin students, with the assistance of their advisor, create a
Curriculum customized to their own educational interests. This necessitates responsibility,
self-motivation, ands elf-sufficiency on the student's part. Clarence created a coherent
plan of study that was academically rigorous but also suited his desire to make music and
work in the music industry. Clarence's concentration was in Ethnomusicology and
Journalism.
In songwriting class, Clarence demonstrated a capacity for leadership forming and
leading musical ensembles in performing his original compositions. Clarence has a
conspicuous aptitude for music performance and songwriting with an impressive
catalogue of original compositions. In the class he distinguished himself as a self-starter
and gifted musician/songwriter. Clarence is articulate, thoughtful, and sensitive. These
qualities are apparent in his expressions as a student and as a musician.
Clarence has my highest regard as both a student and a person. While at Gallatin,
Clarence worked aggressively to formulate and attain his academic goals. He consistently
articulated an intellectual inquisitiveness and enthusiasm for his course of study. Clarence's
excellent academic record reveals an unmistakable commitment to his academic work. Clarence
is also a superb communicator who eloquently expresses his thoughts on his studies and
experiences. During his colloquia, a two-hour oral examination/discussion students at Gallatin
must successfully complete, Clarence demonstrated high capacity for critical thinking.
Clarence's discussion touched upon aspects of Ethnomusicology, Journalism and music
composition manifested within the history of ideas. In addition, Clarence's personal integrity has
been evident since our first meeting. In my opinion, Clarence is a credit to the University and
would suitably represent the best qualities of a student from NYU.
