3. âThe Darkenâd Veilâ
Oh could I raise the darken'd veil,
Which hides my future life from me,
Could unborn ages slowly sail,
Before my viewâand could I see
My every action painted there,
To cast one look I would not dare.
There poverty and grief might stand,
And dark Despair's corroding hand,
Would make me seek the lonely tomb
To slumber in its endless gloom.
Then let me never cast a look,
Within Fate's fix'd mysterious book.
Summary
The speaker in the poem
âThe Darkenâd Veilâ talks
about the possibility of
seeing what the future
holds. He describes the
possibility of looking into
the future and seeing
sorrow, and decides that if
he was given the chance,
he would not look into the
future to see what would
happen.
Your summary slide does NOT
have to include the poem
4. End Rhyme
ï
Would make me seek the lonely tomb
To slumber in its endless gloom.
Then let me never cast a look,
Within Fate's fix'd mysterious book.
ï
Hawthorneâs poem
includes end rhyme. The
words âgloomâ and
âtombâ rhyme and the
words âlookâ and âtookâ
rhyme and are at the end
of the lines.
You will need to cite the poem
and show examples of the
poetic devices that you choose
to highlight in the poem.
5. Personification
