Production Plan
1. Unit G321 – Foundation Portfolio in Media – Production Plan Template
Candidate Name: Claire Olney
Candidate Number: 1186
Week beginning: Monday 28th September
Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday
I need to
research into the
production
process of Q
magazine in
order to gain an
understanding of
how to produce
my own
magazine.
Research how long
it takes Q
magazine to
release so then I
am able to know
when I can release
my own magazine.
I need to do some
research on the
editorial team and
job roles within
the magazine.
I must research the
budgetary
decisions that need
to be made in order
to produce the
magazine. This
must be done after
all article ideas,
stories and
photographs have
been accounted for.
Research the
important people
involved on the
team for the
production
process.

2. Unit G321 – Foundation Portfolio in Media – Production Plan Template
Week beginning: Monday 5th October
Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday
Research the
kinds of people I
could use as
models for my
magazine.
After researching
who I could use as
models for my
magazine, I will
need to ask some
of my friends to
model for the front
cover, contents
page and DPS.
When I have
people willing to
model for my
magazine, I will
need to take the
photographs in my
chosen location
with my chosen
props.
I will need to
decide what I will
include as content
in my magazine.
Therefore I will
need to decide if I
am doing an
interview with
someone or an
informative article
etc.
After deciding on
this, I will need to
begin producing
my magazine hand
drawn drafts.

Week beginning: Monday 12th October
Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday
When I have
drawn out my
drafts, I will need
to add colour to
them, especially
my chosen house
style colours.
I then will be
able to start
creating the front
cover of my
magazine on
Photoshop.
I will need to
choose the best
photographs that
I will have taken
and then edit
them on
Photoshop.
To add to my
front cover, I will
need to add
cover stories to
my magazine.
When I do this, I
need to make
sure that
everything ties in
with the house
style.
When I complete
the front cover, I
will need to
check through it
to see if there are
any
improvements
needed to be
made.

completed, I will
need to begin my
hand drawn
drafts for my
contents page.
I then will need
to colour in the
contents page
drafts, making
sure that my
house style is
consistent.
Once the drafts
are all
completed, I will
need to start
creating my
contents page
using Photoshop.
I will need to
insert the cover
lines onto the
contents page.
After doing this, I
will need to
check over my

Week beginning: Monday 2nd November
Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday
I will then need
to start my hand
drawn drafts for
my double page
spread.
For my double
page spread, I
will need to
either plan
questions for an
interview or plan
out an article of
the featured
person on the
front cover.
I will then need
to ask the person
the questions or
do some research
for the article.
After this, I will
need to produce
my double page
spread, which
will include the
full
interview/article
with pictures.
I will then need
to make any final
adjustments to
the double page
spread, including
editing any of the
photos if need be.
Finally, I will
need to just
proof read and
check over all of
the pages I will
have produced to
make sure
everything has
been done
correctly and
everything is
well presented.

The final steps for producing my magazine will be to send it to the publication so that they can print it. This could be done by any
printing publication but my magazine of inspiration used EMAP, which was then sold to the Bauer Media Group in 2008.

Monday 02/11/15: Research production process for ‘E’
Date of publication: This is the first step of the production process. Once this date has been established for my magazine, I will
need to create a schedule to operate from and keep organised with. A schedule is a plan on how I am going to go about the
production process and when each of the processes will occur.
Managing the schedule: This is a very important step that will assure that my magazine will be produced successfully, so I must
properly manage the schedule for this to be possible. My schedule must be made in such a way that the tasks can still meet the
deadlines even if any problems occur.
Editorial and budgetary decision: This is where the editorial decision is made. The editorial decisions involve the magazine’s
editorial team assembling and deciding what topics will be covered in my magazine’s next issue. In terms of the budgetary
decision, I need to look at the money that is available to me and how it will be spent towards the production of the magazine.
Content Acquisition: Undoubtedly the most important part of the whole production process for E magazine to be made in the
first place is the content acquisition. There are two different ways in which content can be gathered. One way is through in-house
staff writers. The second way is through external writers that are commissioned to write about topics that are specialist in
nature. Artwork and graphics are also worked on at this stage, which are illustrations and pictures to be placed in the magazine.
Also, research is made by journalists or reporters on the content that is going to be covered in the magazine; this research can be
done through the Internet and news databases.
Sub-editing: This focuses on quality control. This stage involves the following important things:
7. Unit G321 – Foundation Portfolio in Media – Production Plan Template
- Checking of the accuracy of all facts in the articles
- Making sure that words are properly spelled
- Making sure that grammar and punctuation are used correctly
- Making sure that all articles follow the house-style
- Working on the page layout
Page Layout: This process involves ensuring that the page layout is set up properly. In performing the task, they use programs
such as InDesign or PageMaker to create the pages professionally. This is also the stage in which adverts from advertisers are
placed into the magazine.
Proofreading: The editorial department will print out a hardcopy of the magazine to then read through it and find any errors. It
is printed as a hardcopy because it is easier than proofreading a softcopy. If a mistake is spotted it is quickly corrected in the
Desktop Publishing file (DTP). This section will be repeated until there are no further corrections needed to be made.
File emailed to printer: Once the magazine has been proofread, the DTP file of the entire magazine will be sent to the printer in
order to print the magazine. Pre-press is defined as the process of checking to make sure that all the fonts and images needed for
the magazine are sent over. After this, the printing company will take over. Before the printing company prints all of the
requested copies by the publication, they will first print a few copies and send it to the publication’s editor to be checked over;
this is called the printer’s proofs. If the editing team are satisfied with the printer’s proofs, the green light will be given to the
printer in order for the mass printing to commence.
Distribution: This is the final stage of the process. Once all of the magazines have been printed, the printing company will
package them neatly and send them to a warehouse. Then, from the warehouse, the magazines will be distributed and sold to the
public in shops.

“Bauer Media is a division of the Bauer Media Group, Europe’s largest privately owned publishing Group. The Group is a worldwide
media empire offering over 300 magazines in 15 countries, as well as online, TV and radio stations.” It distributes magazines such as Q,
Kerrang! Grazier and Heat. Bauer Media would be a suitable distribution company for ‘E’ magazine. This is because Bauer Media is the
company that distributes ‘Q’ magazine, which is my magazine of inspiration. Also, they have a wide range of magazines in which they
distribute meaning that they could advise improvements to my product from the companies’ experiences with the consumers. Their
products are widely distributed through different methods and rather than just using stores for my magazine to reach it’s target
audience the internet could be used as this company already does this. Another of Bauer’s main focuses is on radio, which is another
way of helping my magazine’s distribution. Bauer Media connects and engages 19 million consumers every week with the most
influential brands in the UK. E magazine will launch 04/01/2016, with a print run of 200,000 and cover price of £3.99. Printed and
digital copies will be available. It will launch on 4th January because it is the first Monday of 2016, so it is the start of the first full week of
the year, and it is a new year’s issue.
