The Civil Beat Poll June 2012 — Script for Senate-Congress-Mayor Survey
1. 1) How would you say things are going in the United States right now—are they
generally going in the right direction or the wrong direction?
2) And how about in Hawaii? Would you say that things in Hawaii are generally going in
the right direction or the wrong direction?
3) This August there will be primaries to determine the Democratic and Republican
Party nominees for Hawaiiʼs open U.S. Senate seat. [In addition, the Democratic
primary will select a nominee for U.S. Congress.]* As you know, every Hawaii voter can
choose between voting in the Democratic or Republican primary. The Democratic
Senate primary is expected be a close contest between Mazie Hirono and Ed Case. In
the Republican Senate primary, Linda Lingle may be challenged by John Carroll. [In
addition to the Senate primaries, all Oahu voters can also vote that day in the Honolulu
Mayorʼs race.]**
With all this in mind, are you likely to vote in the Democratic Senate primary, the
Republican Senate primary, or neither primary?
* Included only in Second Congressional District
**Included only on Oahu

driving the debate in the Honolulu Mayorʼs contest. How do you feel about all of the

and not paying enough attention to other issues, or do you think the rail project should
be what the campaign is most focused on?.
12) And now a few quick questions about some important issues. First, do you believe
that same-sex couples should or should not have the legal right to get married?
13) And when it comes to economic issues, would you be more likely to vote for a
candidate who would focus most on fixing the economy and creating jobs right now, or
for a candidate who would focus most on solving the country's long-term problems with
