2. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Hawaii is justly proud to be a national leader in health
care and other social services. In the area of energy, however,
our government --- or at least our Governor --- seems to be
trailing far behind, promoting costly and inefficient industrial
wind farms just as the rest of the country is abandoning them.
Consider this news from Arizona:
Arizona Public Service (APS), the state’s major
electric utility, has announced it will discontinue development
of any further wind energy projects because residential and
commercial rooftop solar provide a far better solution for both
cost and time-of-day energy production.
APS will now utilize solar alone to meet a state
renewable energy mandate. "Right now, it looks like solar --
photovoltaic -- is the lowest-cost resource," said Gordon
Samuel, director of future energy supplies at APS. The
company is actively encouraging expansion of residential and
commercial rooftop solar by providing rebates to its
customers who install such systems, even including free
installation of solar hot water systems.
This news follows an April 16 announcement by Idaho
Power that wind projects are forcing a rate increase of $43
million, expected to rise to $130 million by 2013. The
company has challenged whether further wind projects are
valid or cost-effective.
3. The Arizona decision highlights why I Aloha Molokai (IAM)
continues to insist that Governor Abercrombie, the
Legislature, the PUC and HECO discontinue further
consideration of industrial wind projects in Hawaii, where
solar energy is an even better solution than in Arizona.
Do we really need to repeat Arizona's mistake, or can we
learn from it? If we put our local dollars and local talent to
work on rooftop solar, maybe Hawaii could also be leading
the nation in providing clean, affordable energy for all our
citizens. Wouldn't that be something!
