way to escape the sadness of
the reality.

night to study, to finish their
assignments and etc.
Hence, the artwork known
as “OWL” is created in order
to respond to them.
DESCRIPTION OF MURAL ART
THE CONCEPTS
1.  CONNOTATIVE MEANING
The Owl - Symbolizes intelligence and hardworking
Hanging Down-light + Black Coloured Background - Symbolizes late night.
5. SUBJECTIVE PERCEPTION
The man involved in the
matter of daily life hoping to
be recognized by society is
shown through the striking red
comment bar that’s similar to
the one in FB. He looks as if
he is waiting for somebody to
notice his presence.
3. FIGURE & GROUND
The background is purposely
painted in black coloured to
contrast the white coloured
figure.
4. SELECTIVE ATTENTION
The larger painting of the owl
caught more attention than the
man. This shows the main focus of
the mural art which is to represent
the intellectual group today.
2. MOVEMENT &
POSTURE
Man – Facial expression
shows anxiousness.
Owl - Its observant
sharp eyes portrays its
intelligent character.
The ‘?!’ shows its
uncertainty towards the
man beside it.

‘THE COURTYARD’
  Huda
A high school teacher.
Graduated at Pusat
Asasi Sains Universiti.

Bawang Studio.

ARTIST BACKGROUND
‘THE COURTYARD’
Common feature in old
Chinese settlements or shop
houses of the olden days in
Malaya, where it was a quaint
and calming sky lit gathering
area.
Back in the old days, people
walked by the back lanes as
shortcuts across the main road
and even gathered at these
places to play.
DESCRIPTION OF MURAL ART
THE CONCEPTS
4. INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION
The back lane reflects the Chinese culture
in the olden days through the design and
colour scheme used.
2. SPACE
The Boy (Personal Space) - Leaning on the
window and staring outside the sky, curious
about the world outside and wanting
freedom.
The Cats (Public Space) - Crawling
everywhere and scratching the wall. It has
the freedom to go anywhere that is contrast
to the boy inside.
5. NON-DOMINANT CULTURAL COMMUNICATION
The artist is actually a Malay. The mural art
communicated with the society with a culture that is
not familiar with the artist.
3. FIRST IMPRESSION
The atmosphere is laid back. The boy
seems lonely as he is only one there.
The surrounding symbolizes the olden
days with the traditional appearance of
the house.
1. SUBJECTIVE PERCEPTION
Red Door - Closed tightly to portray that
the security of the back lane is not safe.
Hopscotch - Surrounded by lava to
represent that the back lane culture is
slowly drowned by modern technology and
the unsafe society. The back lane culture
should be protected by the public.

All the greatness and passion of living is filled inside the hole and she wished to just walked in and start her life there as a way to escape the sadness of the reality. 1. CONFLICT The  real  world  is  portrayed  by  dark   concrete  buildings  which  gives  a  sense  of   intense  pressure  and  dullness  of  life.  The   imaginary  world  is  portrayed  by  colourful   buildings  which  gives  a  sense  of  leisure   and  happiness.   3. • 8. THE CONCEPTS 4. SUBJECTIVE PERCEPTION i) “Blub  blub”,  Pipi’s  fish  pet,   hanging  above  the  hole  is   also  one  of  her  imaginary   companion.  It  keeps  her   away  from  loneliness  and   sadness.     ii)  The  magic  world  that  Pipi   created  inside  the  hole  that   she  drawn  is  a  world  that  is   without  stress  from  the  real   world.     iii)  She  does  not  have  the   courage  to  walk  over  all  the   hardships  in  real  life.  Hence,   she  created  a  world  of  her   own  and  decided  to  live   inside  it.   5. MASS COMMUNICATION i)  The  artwork  is   meant  to  reflect   some  individuals  in   the  society  that  are   facing  similar   problems  as  Pipi.     ii)  This  is  to  raise   awareness  to  the   society  to  lend  a   hand  to  such   people  so  that  they   won’t  live  a   decadent  life  like   her.
