New Guidelines
Processing applications-Korea/US
Mr. Polley will give you some basic instructions to help you navigate through the
Naviance program. How many of you are already registered? See Mrs. Beebe for sign-up
instructions.
3. Naviance
A database for world-wide college
searches, career exploration,self-
discovery
Parents, students, teachers, counselors
have accounts; counselors have access
to all accounts
4. Guidelines From Above
Korean government has capped the
number of “programs” (not universities)
to which students may apply -6- total
SAS students apply to 10 programs
anywhere in the world; 10-6=4 (4 to
other countries)
Exception: KAIST - may apply to
additional programs;it counts in the “10”
KAIST allows students to apply to more than 6 programs but be mindful that
every program counts as “one’ towards the ten allowable.
5. (More) Guidelines
Most universities do not require TOEFL
Most are not interested in acceptances
from other universities (verify with
applying university)
Most do not need a chop on transcripts
from Korean Consulate until student is
enrolled;then student takes “official”
transcript to Consulate for a “chop”
Generally speaking, most, not all and this is where student research comes
into play, do not require TOEFL, “chop” on transcripts until student is admitted
and enrolled.
6. Entrance Requirements
Entry requirements vary from university
to university
Research early! Plan accordingly!
Students should research the requirements for every program to which they will apply, make an excel sheet for comparison, and follow the
guidelines.
7. In the beginning.....

Congratulations! You (almost) have a

15. US applications
We understand your situation with
Korean versus US universities and want
to work with you and your student for
the best possible outcome.
For many Korean students, Korean universities offer more “bang for the buck” so US
universities, if top tier, could be an excellent first choice or back up choice. We understand this
and ask that you work with us. Please be forthright in your discussions with us because the more we know the more able we are able to help
you and your student reach desired goals.
16. Junior Year
College Night held in October 2012
Met with Junior Class for Uniquest
assignment (college searches, self-
reflection, parent/student preferences
for universities)that includes surveys
Junior Interview-this spring by May 17
How many of you were able to attend? It had lots of information for students and parents. UCAS,
US, Canada, Asian universities. Uniquest helps students and parents focus or clarify plans for
life after high school. Almost all are attending university, but where?
17. Junior Interview
Individual meeting with Counselor to
discuss plans after high school based
on Naviance surveys-student’s/parent’s
Once surveys are completed, student
arranges an appointment with
Counselor and parent for discussion
Mr. Polley indicated where to find the surveys. Please have student schedule the Junior Interview no later than Friday, May 17. The meeting will
focus on the best plan of action, specific to the student, for his or her intended colleges.
18. The Holistic Approach
Most schools use an holistic approach
for admission (grade point average,
SAT scores, essays, activities, letters of
recommendation, special talents,
legacy)
Most important - transcript!
Most US schools, but not all, use a holistic approach for evaluating students for admission.
Across the board the transcript - what is offered, what is taken, grades earned - is the most
important factor. SAT are not the most important but strong scores will help.
19. Unknown Factors
Institutional needs (more female science
or engineering students? more
architecture students? more full pay
students?) These change every year
and we are not privy to the needs of the
institution
Even though the applicant pool can be overflowing with “academically strong students”, institutional needs can drive admissions! What are
they? We don’t know but they often change
from year to year.
20. Senior Year
Have firm list of universities by
beginning of school
November 28 - all applications
completed!
April 1 - notification
May 1 - acceptance of offer
