Global PD Team Tools
Welcome. My name is … . We’re going to talk today about a common question that we get at these events “what’s next”. We’re going to talk about a series of solutions that we offer to help districts and schools with wherever they are on their PLC Journey. Before we get started, I want to show you a video which provides a good example.
That video was a good example of a a number of services provided by Solution Tree and a lot of hard work by U.S. Grant High School. This is is a more micro-level example at Piedmont Elementary in Duluth Minnesota. What we’re looking at is common formative assessment results from a kindergarten team at Piedmont. Their teams worked together to identify essential standards, unpacked those standards into granular learning targets, built common formative assessments based on those learning targets and then started the teaching-assessing cycle. In the upper right, you see the result of the first common formative assessment. 38% of the students were found to be below proficient on this learning target. This team met to discuss the results, compared each others results and shared teaching strategies. They then assigned the teacher with the best results to reteach the 38% of below-proficient students. They then retested those 38 students on the learning target and the number dropped to 10%. They then retaught those 4 students and the number dropped to 2. In order to see schoo-lwide or district-wide results, this kind of rigor has to be used for every learning target, every essential standard, every team at every grade level of every school. This is hard work. It requires a lot of cultural and logistical change. So our goal today is to introduce you to the services that Solution Tree provides to help you with this work and this change.
I’m going to take you through an ideal PLC journey and the services that we offer at each stage. I say ideal because we know that every school is different and you might be in several stages all at once. But what we’ve seen from working with many districts is that some parts of the journey are like painting a house – if you follow a certain sequence – if you do the scraping and sanding and priming before you paint, the job goes a lot easier. So let walk through the stages…
Explain each stage briefly.
As we go through these stages, we’re going to share a lot of examples of our work and the impact it’s had throughout the nation and internationally. At your tables is a booklet full of what we call Evidence of Effectiveness. These are case studies from schools and districts across the nation who have partnered with us to achieve effective PLCs. I’ll be using these examples as I go through each stage.
We offer several services at the Preparatory phase.
The first is a PLC Needs Analysis. We can do this all on the phone and via email. We review your data and artifacts, and interview you about your schools culture and practices. At the end of this process, we provide a recommendation of the next steps you should take for your PLC process.
A PLC Overview – something that is done at your school or district by an expert – is something we recommend that your Guiding Coalition attend in order to get everyone on the same page regarding PLC practices and vocabulary.
At the same time, a PLC Keynote – a higher level presentation like the one you saw today – is recommended for all staff to help them understand the research and benefits of professional learning communities.
Sanger Unified School District one of the case studies in your packet. Their district leaders launched their PLC initiative in 2005 after attending a PD overview offered by Rick and Becky Dufour
At your tables is a copy of Rick DuFour’s PLC at Work Continuum. This is a tool that you can use to self-assess where your various teams and schools are in the PLC journey. I’ve pulled a couple of the indicators out of the Building a Foundation portion. What I’d like you to do is take a moment to think about how you would score your school or district on these two items. Then turn to your table and discuss the “why”. If you score yourself highly, why have you been able to achieve that level? If you’re in the lower ranges of the continuum, why is that and what do you think needs to happen to progress?
Give them about 3 mins to discuss.
This is from a survey that we sent to over 140 PLC districts at various stages of implementation. In the survey, we asked districts who had been on the PLC journey for 3 or more years to rate the effectiveness of their PLC practices in terms of measurable impact on student achievement. What became really interesting is when we compared the answers of those districts who rated themselves at low or now measurable impact to those with high measurable impact. In this case, you can see that nearly 96% of schools with high measurable impact build shared knowledge among staff vs. 23% of low performers.
.
To help you build shared knowledge, we recommend a PLC Overview day for all your staff as well as a PLC Event, like the one you’re at now or a less expensive Hybrid event.
Let’s watch a quick video on how Hybrid events work.
Birdville ISD, TX (30 school district in the suburbs of Fort Worth) needed a solution to get 300 teachers on the same page at one time with the best PLC experts and content available but didn’t have the budget to travel to a PLC at Work Institute. They selected a PLC Institute Hybrid Event which not only fulfilled their needs, but far surpassed them. Patrick Guy, who booked the PD, said it was the “best professional development the district has had in the last decade.”
Another solution to build shared knowledge is the PLC at Work Process Today Online Course.
Online Courses are an excellent way to ensure that all staff has a baseline of understanding on core concepts. They are also one of the only ways that administrators can prove learning. Online courses include
30 hours of rigorous study, but on teacher’s timeline
CEU Credit
And Expert facilitators
We recommend using online courses in the following ways:
As “flipped classroom” approaches, where participants of a PD day are required to take the online course beforehand. This ensures that all staff have the same level of understanding going into the PD day and increases the likelihood of engagement during the PD day.
As a way to get new or struggling teachers up-to-speed on PLC concepts.
Another solution for building shared knowledge is the Global PD Video Library.
A large video library of all of the best experts discussing all PLC topics. The videos are searchable and browsable and work on any major device. Videos can be used to enhance your onsite PD days and you can then assign teachers to watch and discuss further PD videos.
Cartwright School District was looking for on-demand PD with current and relevant topics to continue strengthen their PLC's. Mary Kay Radavich, director of STEM and PLCs
At Cartwright recently told us, “The access to the videos as a tool for professional development has been amazing! We love Global PD!”
And finally, providing your staff with Learning by Doing – which you can find at our bookstore here at the event – and facilitating a book study is a proven way to build shared knowledge around the PLC process.
Let’s move now to Developing Teams and Collaborative Culture. There are a number of solutions we offer to assist in this stage:
The PLC Coaching Academy is a service for School Leaders in which six onsite coaching days are spread out over the school year – two days at the beginning, middle and end of the year. In between these coaching days, leaders are given homework and have access to their coaches via phone and email to help troubleshoot.
Virtual Coaching for principals is a similar solution, but offers all coaching via webinar. This makes the coaching more affordable for schools.
Embedded coaching is something that U.S. Grant – the school you saw in the video at the beginning of this presentation – used effectively. In this model, a coach is available to work directly with school leaders and teams for 10 or more school days throughout the year.
As we’ve discussed before, the Global PD video library is a great way to augment your own PD days and provide information to teachers on the best practices related to collaboration.
Finally, the PLC at Work Process Today Online Course, as we’ve said before, is an excellent way to train teachers on all aspects of PLCs.
Eau Claire, WI: is now in their second year of doing embedded coaching with those schools after the Academies. The district has 19 schools and about 900 teachers. According to the Elementary Curriculum Director, Kris Dimock, “the PLC Coaching Academy was the best thing we’ve ever done for our staff and our students.”
Jefferson County PS, KY (163 schools, 98K students) needed a more consistent approach/contact with PLC expects to help bridge the gap from attendance at PLC Institutes and/or their onsite embedded coaching (this gap was sometimes several months where their school leaders were left to figure it out on their own). To solve this need, they invested in Virtual PLC Coaching for 70 of their title 1 principals. The program was so successful that 70 non-title 1 principals, upon hearing from their peers in the program, invested their own funds to join.
Seneca High School – one of the schools in your packet – have used many of these solutions to achieve their results.
More data from the survey we discussed earlier.. In this case – you can see that nearly 83% of schools with high measurable impact clarify and break down essential learning outcomes consistently vs. 16% of the schools with low or no measurable impact. So getting very clear and unpacking standards is a very important part of the process.
To aid you in this process, we have a number of solutions. The first is The Conference on Standards and Assessments.
This is a high quality conference like the one you’re at now, but focused on the latest research and best practices around standards and assessments. It’s usually the next conference that people go to after attending a PLC Institute.
Another solution to consider is a PD day on Identifying Essential Standards. This is an intensive workshop during which one of our expert associates works with your staff on-site to understand and develop the skills of choosing and unpacking essential standards as teams. The goal of this PD day is to provide your teams with the foundation they need to then unpack all of their standards.
Fairdale High School – one of the case studies in your packet – is a good example of a school that partnered with Solution Tree to provide PD on Standards and Assessments.
Another part of Global PD is software that helps streamline the work of PLC teams. We load whatever academic standards you are using into the tool. Teams can then navigate those standards to choose those they consider essential. They then create learning targets and write student-friendly versions of those learning targets. Global PD is the only tool on the market that requires this work to be done before assessments can be built; all common assessments must be based on one or more learning targets. As teachers work, there are videos, frameworks and guidelines to help.
The next step in the Journey is assessing student learning.
From the same survey I showed you earlier, this question asks ‘How frequently do teams in your school or district review formative and other assessment data. Note that nearly 70% of the high performers do this weekly or monthly. Almost the same percentage of low performers do not do this regularly at all. So following a frequent and systematic process is very important.
To help, we offer the Assessment Now Conference.
This is usually the next conference people attend after the Conference on Standards and Assessments. All of Solution Tree’s conferences receive very high marks from participants and this one focuses on the latest research and best practices around assessment – particularly as it relates to the PLC at Work process.
We also recommend a custom workshop at your school based on building common formative assessments. Rick DuFour describes CFAs as the “lynchpin” of the PLC process. During this workshop, your staff can get a hands-on practice at building CFAs and analyzing assessment data. The goal is to provide them with a strong foundation from which they can continue to build and review CFAs as an ongoing practice
Tangipahoa Parish – LA – 20k students – 35 sites – Struggling with having staff create quality CFAs. Decided to have a 2 day onsite professional development workshop on CFAs. After their experience with first 2 day session was complete they quickly booked an additional 4 onsite days furthering that process. The feedback was, “this is the best assessment work we have ever done. Everyone has loved the match that was provided. We feel like she has given us not only the direction needed, but the tools necessary to continue to improve upon this work”
Here, the survey asked ‘Do teams in your school or district use technology to capture and report formative assessment data’. High performers do this 82% of the time vs. 54% of low performers.
There are a lot of technology solutions out there for assessments, but Global PD is the only tool in which Rick DuFour, Becky DuFour, Robert Eaker and Mike Mattos played a direct role in the design. It’s the only tool that is completely aligned to the PLC process.
Global PD is different in a few ways:
It requires teams to work together to build common formative assessments
All CFAs must be tied to one or more learning targets
Teams must agree on the rigor of each of the items in the CFA as well as what ‘proficiency’ means for that assessment
Teams have access to videos, guidelines and frameworks as they work…
And finally, Global PD is the only tool on the market that presents teacher data together on one screen to encourage sharing and collaboration.
Piedmont Elementary – who’s data I showed at the beginning of this presentation – used Global PD to achieve their results. There is a Case Study in your packet on their work if you’d like to learn more.
Global PD is the tool that Piedmont used to monitor its CFAs.
