What is a blockchain?
• Distributed, decentralized, transparent, immutable consensus ledger
• Created in 2008 to keep track of bitcoin – digital data can be copied
• Each peer holds a copy of the complete ledger
• Digital information can be recorded and distributed but not edited
• Can be public, permissioned, private
• Also called Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT)
27. 27
Blockchain value prop
• Faster: Removes long, expensive money transfer processes with
several intermediaries, multi-layer systems
• Safer: info spread across a network; hacker would have to track
down all instances
• More secure: “add-only” function - very difficult to edit, impossible
to delete transactions
• Cheaper: Capgemini estimates savings of up to $16 billion in
banking fees for consumers each year
28. 28
“Even though they are still
uncertain of the impact
blockchain will have on their
businesses, 60% of CIOs in the

What are cryptoassets?
• As of May 2019 – 2,000+ in 4 categories
• Use cryptography, public ledger, no middleman
• Four categories: Cryptocurrencies, Platform Tokens,
Transactional Tokens, Utility Tokens
41. 41

• Thousands of alternate cryptocurrencies (“altcoins”)
• Market value of over $120 billion
43. 43
“The dollar’s influence on global financial
conditions could similarly decline if a
financial architecture developed around
the new [digital currency] and it
displaced the dollar’s dominance in credit
markets. By reducing the influence of the
US on the global financial cycle, this
would help reduce the volatility of capital
flows to emerging market economies.”

How might you actually use one of these fintech
solutions in your organization?
58. 58
Getting started with fintech
• Always prioritize value you are trying to deliver for clients
• Fintech plan should lay a foundation for long-term strategy
• Consider all business functions
• Start small: get an early win where you have data and buy-in
• Build vs buy – always be willing to investigate partners

I worked at IBM for 15 years including a stint in Global Financing working for the future CFO Martin Schroeter. Also co-wrote a white paper on blockchain and AI with MIT Media Lab professor Sandy Pentland. I also have spoken about AI and data science at ODSC events in London and New York
Today we are being overwhelmed with data. And technology has transformed value into ones and zeros – into data that can be manipulated and distributed instantaneously anywhere on the planet with a keystroke. This has tremendous implications for financial services organizations.
How do you put a price on a painting created by an instance of artificial intelligence? How do organizations manage the ongoing trading of the myriad cryptoassets being created around the world? Will the adoption of blockchain and bitcoin make existing financial institutions obsolete in a new citizen banking paradigm? Or will they usher in new ways for these organizations to deliver value and continue to grow, innovate and generate attributable revenue.
Technologies like AI, machine learning, robotics, 5G, Internet balloons, cryptoassets, chatbots and blockchain are poised to transform how financial services organizations create, capture, store and share value. Not only will these tools help them manage the data deluge, they will enable them to do remarkable things within this new model.
Smart financial services organizations are already investigating the ways these new technologies will impact their business models. And developing strategies to address the pros and cons.
In my talk, I will discuss various options for how State Street might take advantage of these emerging technology breakthroughs to stay innovative and competitive.

All these cryptoassets can’t be labelled as cryptocurrencies for a simple reason that they aren’t created with a motive of replacing money. Therefore, it is important to divide them based on the characteristics they possess.
Ethereum is both a platform and a coin - ether
Ripple is used for low commission currency exchange, fast international transactions – banks that support it include Santander, Axis Bank, Yes Bank, Westpac, Union Credit, NBAD,UBS
Utility tokens - issued in order to fund development of the cryptocurrency and that can be later used to purchase a good or service offered by the issuer of the cryptocurrency
