Language Teaching
Methods/Approaches
2. Although the need to learn English language is
almost as old as human history it self, the origins of
modern language education are in the study and
teaching of latin in the 17th century. Latin had for
many centuries been the dominant language of
education, commerce, religion, and goverment in
much of the western world, but it was desplaced by
French, Italian, and English by the 16th century.
John Amos Comerius was one of many people who
tired to reverse this trend. He composed a
complete course for learning Latin, covering the
entire school curriculum, culminating, in his opera
Didactica Omnia, 1657.

3. Methods is a plan for presenting the language material to be
learned and should be based upon selected approach. In order for
an approch to be translated into a method, an instructional system
must be designed considering the objective of the teaching
/learning, how the content is to be selected and organized, the
types of taks to be performed, the role of students and the roles
of teachers.
1.Example of structural methods are grammar translation and the
audio lingual method.
2.Example of functional methods include the oral
approach/situational language teaching.
3.Example of interactive methods include the direct method, the
series methods, communicative language teaching language
immersion.
Approach is a set of assumptions about the nature of
language and language learning. But does not involve
procedure or provide any details about how to such
assaumptions sholud translate in to the classroom Setting .
4. Grammar-translation method
Techniques :
1.The roles of the teacher and the
student.
2. translation of a literary passage.
3. reading comprehension questions.
4. antonyms/ synonyms
5. deductive application of rule.
6. fill in the blanks.
7. memorization.
8. use words in sentences.
9. composition.
5. 1. The goal is to make students learn
how to communicate in the target
language.
2. the students need to associate
meaning and the target language
directly.
3. the syllabus is based on situations
and topics.
4. grammar is taught inductively.
5. Language is viewed as primarily
spoken not written.
6. Vocabulary is more emphasized than
grammar
Direct Method
Theory :
6. The characteristic :
1. Language is speech, not writing
2. a language is a set of habits
3. teach the language, not about the language
4. a language is what its native speaker say, not
what someone thinks they ought to say
5. language are different.
Audio Lingual Method
The audiolingual method focuses on the comprehension of
language at a largely mechanical level (Davidson, 1978).
7. Silent way is an approach to teaching foreign language
developed by Dr. Caleb Gattgno bsed on a theory of
learning and teaching rather than on a theory of language.
The silent is meant to give the students the opportunity
to fully exploit precious classroomtime. The teacher
presence in the classroom is limited to providing a model
of the language tha the students are going to work on.
The basic assumption is that the students wiil bring their
potential and their previous experience of learning their
mother tongue to the foreign language classroom.

8. Silent Way
There are different kinds of materials
with different types :
1.Ad hoc drawing
2. transparences
3. Worksheets
4. films and television programs
5. printed texts.

9. Suggestopedia
There are three main parts ( Richards and Rodgers,
1993:151) :
1.The oral review section. This includes the
discussion of previously learned material.
2. study session. This consists of looking over a new
dialogue or other written materials.
3. the séance session. This is the one by which
suggestopedia is well known.
