As the video begins, the audience are introduced to the
programme’s setting. The fields and trees communicate, the
programme is set in a village so the audience know the
environment is peaceful and non-threatening. Also the screen
is bright and colourful which is appropriate for the target
audience (children) as bright colours excite them and attracts
them as its so bright. We then see a bright red van driving
across.
As the audio plays we hear ‘Postman Pat..’ At this point an
older man is shown on the screen wearing glasses and a
bright blue uniform, he looks very friendly as he smiles
communicating to the audience that the main character is
welcoming. This also informs the children who the main
character is before the programme has started and the
character’s name. The following screenshot will introduce
Pat’s sidekick.
The audio sings ‘Postman Pat and his black & white cat..’ to
introduce his friend Jess the cat. The cat appeals to children
as she is small and furry, also most children love animals, so this
programme appeals to the audience.
In the scene displayed on this image, Pat is taking letters from the post-box.
This communicates that this is his lifestyle as he does this everyday.
This interests the audience as children like to know how things are
made. For example on the channel CBeeBies they have a programme
called “Come Outside” where the main character ride on a plane and
show how different products are made. Here is a video for an example
where she shows how water gets from a river to your tap:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-WxDQs7hpc
This communicates to the audience where Pat lives. He lives in a rural
countryside which is appropriate for children as it’s settling for them
and at a young age, kids love the idea of open fields and being
surrounded by nature. They can also assume that the characters will be
older and friendly which also appeals to them.
The remaining video shows Pat driving around the
town to introduce the setting to the audience. I
feel this theme tune is informative for the audience
as they know who the main characters are as no
others characters are seen, they know the setting
and lastly they know what Pat’s job is. I think this is
useful as the audience are familiar with the
programme before it’s even begun. Also I feel it’s
relatable to some of the audience members, as
they could live in the countryside or have a family
member who is a postman.
