Free From TV!
Children as well as adults are becoming increasingly susceptible towards the unhealthy effects of TV nowadays. Do you know
that TV is watched by 66% of US people during their dinner time? About 50% of American children aged between 6-17 years
have TV sets in their bedrooms! During a typical day, 70% of day care centres use a television.
A few shocking facts:
1. TV is watched for 1680 minutes in a year by an average American youth
2. Only 38.5 minutes is spent by parents to have a meaningful conversation with their children in US
3. On a weekly basis, an average child is spending approximately 25 hours watching television. Thus, on a yearly basis the
child is spending 1300 hours watching TV which is more than the number of hours spend in school (900 hours in a year)!
4. A US child watches an astonishing 20,000 30 second commercials in a yearly basis!
There are various activities which are more fun and entertaining than turning on a TV and sitting at home. Children along with
their families can engage in fun activities such as going for ice skating or roller skating, paint a room, a mural or a picture,
attend a community concert, volunteer to teach maths, reading, computer skills in a school, visit the library, play a guitar or any
other musical instrument, participate in a community clean-up, listen to the radio, put together a puzzle, visit a zoo etc.
