MAIN IDEA OF THIS SLIDE:
Introduce myself
Outline talking points:
Hi, I’m Chip Childers, and I’m the CTO of the Cloud Foundry Foundation.
Thanks very much for coming today.

MAIN IDEA ON THIS SLIDE:
Before I go into the big idea, I want to inspire you.
Outline talking notes:
I’m going to talk about Cloud Foundry and about what it can mean for you and your career, but first…
I want to try to inspire you for a second. And I promise, I’m going somewhere with this.
I want to suggest to you that right now, sitting in this crowd, there is a ton of opportunity and power to make a HUGE change in our world. All of you, all these developers, have such an amazing opportunity.
Let me tell you what I mean…
[CLICK TO NEXT SLIDE]
MAIN IDEA ON THIS SLIDE:
Since the beginning of time, it’s CREATORS who’ve made marvels happen. Here’s an example.
Outline talking notes:
It has been true since the beginning of time that creators made our world’s marvels possible. People who do stuff. People like you.
4,500 years ago, the pyramids of Giza were built, one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
A pharaoh had the idea, but it took tens of thousands of people to build the things.
[CLICK TO NEXT SLIDE]
MAIN IDEA ON THIS SLIDE:
Railroads are another example.
Outline talking notes:
Or here’s another one. Zoom to the 1800s when the first Transcontinental Railroad was built in the United States.
There were some rich barons who had the idea, but it was the people – the CREATORS – who had to make this work.
Machinists, engineers, architects, you name it.

MAIN IDEA ON THIS SLIDE:
Here’s a modern proof point: the iPhone and AppsStore.
Outline talking notes:
Okay, and how about a more modern example.
Who has a smart phone with you today? All of you? Pretty much everyone.
And this thing is the most important tool we use in our lives! It’s not just a phone that takes pictures and texts. We do everything on it. We pay our bills. We do our banking. It’s our boarding pass to get on a plane. It’s how we buy groceries. It’s how we get an Uber. Seriously, I don’t know about you, but I’d rather lose my WALLET than lose my phone.
It’s not like this happened because Steve Jobs just snapped his fingers and said, “iPhone.”
It happened because of the app store. And who made that app store happen?
People. Creators. Developers.
People just like you are why this modern marvel is here, and why we all love it so much.
[CLICK TO NEXT SLIDE]
MAIN IDEA ON THIS SLIDE:
Where I’m going with this: Developers are the heroes in the story today.
Outline talking notes:
Do you see where I’m going with this? Why did I build up with all of that?
Because developers – creators like all of you sitting in this room, are the new hero in the story all around us.
You are changing the way companies interact and engage with your users, their community, and their customers. You are the fundamental shift in how organizations are building out a new way of business. They’re transforming their business models. The way they engage with the world around them. It’s just huge.
It’s exciting, right?
[CLICK TO NEXT SLIDE]
For all these achievements, it was the doers who made them happen. But now, for the first time in history, developers – the people doing the doing in a software world -- also have immense power. You’re sought after for your valuable expertise, and not just by CIOs, but by CEOs and CMOs. (You could bring in mention of why doers didn’t have power in the past; they were more unskilled labor, not brought on for expertise but for the grunt work that didn’t pay, caused health hazards, and probably wasn’t exactly fun to do.)
So why do I build up with that? The power and control is changing. Devleopers are the new hero in the story. You are changing the way companies interact and engage with your users, their community, and their customers. You are the fundamental shift in how organizations are building out a new way of busienss. They’re transforming their business models. The way they engage with the world around them.
MAIN IDEA ON THIS SLIDE:
There’s a whole class of modern ‘marvels’ that we’re being asked to build: it’s called “DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION.”
Outline talking notes:
So today, what are you being asked to create, to build, that’s going to change the world?
One of the biggest modern marvels of our time is this idea of “DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION.”
How many of you have heard your CIO or your CTO talking about this? Most of you, right?
You’re hearing them talk about how important it is to fail faster. Innovate more. Be more responsive to customers.
You’re hearing them talk about how urgent it is, because they all know that they have to change the way they interact with technology.
And if the phrase “digital transformation” gets old and tired, they’ll change it to some other phrase and they’ll KEEP talking about it. Because it’s that important.
Like I said before, every single company needs to be a software company now. It’s that simple. If they don’t, they’ll die.
I’m going to give you an example that makes this really concrete.
[CLICK TO NEXT SLIDE]
Outline talking notes:
I like to use banking as an example of this, because it’s so easy and tangible.
Look, five years ago, if you’d told me I would do the majority of my banking on my mobile phone, I would have laughed in your phase.
And now?
And think about what that transformation required. Build app, change the internal systems, change their whole approach to working with customers.
How many times do you get updates pushed to your apps on your phone? Once a year? Once a month? Seriously, it’s daily!
Devs are now more connected to customers, so you can continuously deliver changes.
What if they didn’t do that? Would you bank there? Probably not.
This matters. Developers are the hero.
[CLICK TO NEXT SLIDE]
MAIN IDEA ON THIS SLIDE:
Companies need to fundamentally change how code is written, deployed, and changed.
Outline talking notes:
If you’re a CIO or a CTO right now, I guarantee you, what you’re thinking about most is how to change the way that code is written.
How it’s deployed.
How it’s updated.
[CLICK TO NEXT SLIDE]
Developers are the key to their successful transition to software
They’re trying to change their entire company’s relationship to technology:
* how code is written, deployed, and changed
MAIN IDEA ON THIS SLIDE:
And companies care about how systems are managed, secured, and scaled.
Outline talking notes:
And if you’re the CIO or CTO or CEO you’re thinking about how your systems are managed. How you keep everything secure. And how you scale.
You need this to happen fast. Like, lightening fast. Not months, but days. Not days, but hours or minutes.
You need developers who are innovating and pushing the envelope.
You need velocity.
Who’s going to give the CIO and CTO and CEO that?
You.
So, I promised I was going somewhere with all of this, and now I’m getting there.
[CLICK TO NEXT SLIDE]
Our software world needs heroes who are going to help companies fundamentally change the way they interact with technology.
And that means for developers, there has never been a time when you’ve had a bigger role to play, when you had this much opportunity
The trick is to find a way to free developers to do what they do best
So that’s what we’re here to talk about. How Cloud Foundry can empower you to rise to the amazing challenges and opportunities you have, and what that can mean for you, your job, your company, and your career.

MAIN IDEA ON THIS SLIDE:
The most important value of a cloud application platform is speed.
Outline talking notes:
It all starts here: Cloud application platform gives you velocity.
Today, hundreds, thousands of organizations around the world are migrating services to Cloud Foundry, from dipping their toes into the water to running their most business-critical services.
We hear amazing stories
“we reduced our time to market for apps from months to literally days,”
“we cut our mean time to repair down from 25 minutes to 30 seconds.”
I want to tell you a couple of stories about how CF is helping
[CLICK TO NEXT SLIDE]
MAIN IDEA ON THIS SLIDE:
Here’s a great example: Comcast
Outline talking notes:
Cloud Foundry prototype in 2014.
2015 they moved their customer critical services onto the platform. The important stuff.
Today: 180 M transactions daily
+1000 devs
Almost 10,000 apps in PRODUCTION
All working 75% faster than before.

Here’s a quote from their head of delivery
Or here’s another, “I am spreading the word of how convenient it is to be able to write an application, and within a minute or two publish that application, get a valid SSL certificate and web presence.”
Remember how I mentioned that 1000 developers are using CF at Comcast? WORD OF MOUTH.
See what I mean? It’s developers, CREATORS like you, who have fundamentally changed the entire company at Comcast. It’s so incredible!

Ogilvy is one of the oldest and largest advertising agencies in the world, tracing its roots back far into the mid 20th century

MAIN IDEA ON THIS SLIDE:
I hope you’re catching on to what we’re saying is possible here.
These aren’t small, incremental improvements
Developers are being freed, and the results are amazing
And velocity isn’t the only thing they’re going to get. There’s another important benefit….
[CLICK TO NEXT SLIDE]
MAIN IDEA ON THIS SLIDE:
Why do diverse minds matter? Because It’s how innovation really happens. Without diversity you’re not innovating.
Outline talking notes:
I’m a firm believer that diversity drives innovation. Diversity of backgrounds, thought, people, organizations.
I don’t think anyone can say they are truly innovating if there’s not diversity at the table.
This is the thing about open source that I’m most passionate about. Without that, we are never going to be successful or innovative.
It allows us to solve for innovation and other problems with a valuable diversity of perspective, better than the world could achieve with an assigned, static team.
[CLICK TO NEXT SLIDE]
MAIN IDEA ON THIS SLIDE:
There are huge benefits to open source as well, namely this: better and faster innovation because of diverse minds.
Outline talking notes:
So, Cloud Foundry is open source, and that matters a great deal.
The most exciting thing about open source is that I can sit down around a table with so many different organizations and people and find common ground, say, how do we make the best technology? How do we continuously innovate?
And why does that matter? Why pull all those people together around the table and have that conversation?

MAIN IDEA ON THIS SLIDE:
Cloud Foundry Foundation’s Open Service Broker API project.
Outline talking notes:
I also want to highlight what we’re doing with our Open Service Broker API project, which is standardizing service delivery across cloud offerings.
We have contributors from various open source communities, like CFF, CNCF, collaborating to make it easier to bind services to the platform of your choice and ensure your services are connected to the cloud.
This makes it easier for developers to use the services they need to make their apps work without having to worry about how those services are tied to their cloud environment
• In other words, you can focus more on innovating and less on problems with integration and portability.

MAIN IDEA ON THIS SLIDE:
Community is growing exponentially in the past 12 months.
Outline talking notes:
Our community is growing at a nearly exponential rate. We are now at more than 2400 contributors, with almost 1k of those contributing in the last 12 months, alone.
Those commits are huge, too. More than 51k in the last year. This makes us one of the largest open source projects in the world, and, indeed, in history. In addition to these commits, we’ve seen nearly 1k pull requests in the last year.
Our community continues to grow beyond just the code base and commits. We are up to 70,000 members in our global community, with more than 200 self-organizing groups.
The Foundation is healthy, as well. Since our inception, we’ve continued to grow our membership at a rate of 2 per month. This growth rate has continued in 2017.
[CLICK TO NEXT SLIDE]
MAIN IDEA ON THIS SLIDE:
Cloud Foundry’s community is large, vibrant, trustworthy.
Outline talking notes:
While we’re on the topic of open source, this would be a good time for me to say more about the role of Cloud Foundry’s community.
It’s such an honor to talk about this. Our global contributors come from some of the most trusted providers in the world, and some of the most energetic and engaged problem solvers.
Together it’s this huge, vibrant, trustworthy community of developers who are driven to come together and innovate like no one of us can do alone.
I’m going to say more about the community in just a moment.
On this slide you’re seeing the logos of our platinum and gold members, so you can get a feel for who’s contributing.
[CLICK TO NEXT SLIDE]
MAIN IDEA ON THIS SLIDE:
Here are more members!
Outline talking notes:
And on this slide you’re seeing our other members. So many great organizations coming together to solve problems and innovate. All these companies are invested in some way in ensuring the success of Cloud Foundry.

MAIN IDEA ON THIS SLIDE: [THIS SLIDE BUILDS TO THE NEXT ONE…..]
What I hope you’ll take away is that Cloud Foundry blends the best of these two advantages.
Outline talking notes:
So what I hope you’ll understand about Cloud Foundry is that it blends the best of these two advantages.
The velocity you can get by taking your services to the cloud and automating as much as possible, and
The innovation that comes from the open source community putting their diverse minds together

MAIN IDEA ON THIS SLIDE: [THIS SLIDE BUILDS FROM THE PREVIOUS ONE]
That’s why Cloud Foundry is so close to my heart, and I hope to make it close to yours.
Outline talking notes:
And that’s what we do. That’s why Cloud Foundry is so close to my heart. And I hope that you’ll make it part of yours.
I want to tell you how you can do that.
[CLICK TO NEXT SLIDE]
MAIN IDEA ON THIS SLIDE: Two – You can contribute as a member of our community
Outline talking notes:
Two, you can contribute! We’d love to see more contributors and commiters to the project. You can contribute code to the codebase.
You’ll be using your voice to help us be the most innovative platform out there.
[CLICK TO NEXT SLIDE]
MAIN IDEA ON THIS SLIDE: Three – You can champion more adoption in your community
Outline talking notes:
You can be the champion at your company for spreading the use of these kinds of tools.
Remember that story I told you from Comcast? They have 900 developers using their Pivotal Cloud Foundry now, up from just a couple two years ago, and that’s through no internal marketing. It’s through word of mouth.
You can be the one who evangelizes for this, spreads the word, shows others how to get started, how to use it.
[CLICK TO NEXT SLIDE]
MAIN IDEA ON THIS SLIDE: And Four: Think Big!
Outline talking notes:
And finally, whatever you do, think big.
It might be trite, but it’s real and I mean it.
If you have the powers to create, innovate, in your organization, think big. Fail fast. Iterate often and get something out there.
Developers can change the world, and your communities. Have fun with it!

MAIN IDEA ON THIS SLIDE: Thank you
