语音 Phonetics

The basic structure of Chinese syllables

Chinese syllables consist of two sections: the initials (the beginning consonant)
and the finals (the rest of the syllable). The finals a, o, e and those begin with a, o, e
may stand alone as syllables.

2. Tones



There are four tones in Chinese, as shown in the following table:
1st tone 2nd tone 3rd tone 4th tone

The tones are used to distinguish meaning of a syllable. Characters with different
tones have different meanings.
E.g.:
mā má mǎ mà

mother flax house to curse

bā bá bǎ bà

eight to pull target father

3. The Way to Mark the Tones

The four tones are indicated respectively by the following four tone marks:
“ ”
They are marked over the main vowel.

4. Neutral Tone
bàba
māma
In common speech some syllables are pronounced at a light and short tone. Such
tone is called the neutral tone, which is indicated with no mark.
E.g. : bàba (father) māma (mother)
