Summary of Global Platforms and Global Platform El Salvador
The Global Platforms (GP) is a global network of youth training hubs for empowerment and activism. The key mandates of GP’s are to equip youth with
knowledge, skills and confidence to be active citizens and to engage with decision makers. The first GPs started in Tanzania and Denmark in 2009 and as of
present has expanded to 10 training centres in Kenya, Ghana, Palestine, Jordan, Myanmar, Nepal, Bangladesh and El Salvador. The platforms are founded on
experiential and participatory learning techniques that have evolved through inspiration from great educational thinkers like Paolo Freire and John Dewey. The
GPs are an extension of ActionAid’s strong experience providing formal and non-formal training using participatory methods.
ActionAid (AA) is a federation with 40 national members. With the aim to become more “locally” rooted and globally connected”, AA El Salvador is working on
becoming a ActionAid country office. Based on the learning from its engagement in various sectors at various levels from grassroots to international AA
Nicaragua has evolved through various changes on approaches and work modalities. Starting from charity-based work in the 1980s to improve the basic living
conditions of the poorest people, AA Nicaragua has now adopted a human rights-based approach with an aim to enhance the capacity of the poor and excluded
people to claim and exercise their rights to live a dignified life. AA’s approach reaffirms the role of popular struggles, social justice movements, popular actions,
community-based organisations and people’s organisations for rights conscientisation and transformation of unequal power relations.
The Global Platform in El Salvador started in 2008 collaboration between ActionAid Denmark and ActionAid Nicaragua. Every year, approximately 4000
volunteers and professionals are trained at our Global Platforms.
The objective with the Global platform in El Salvador is to support young people to influence local and national level policies through our
capacity building training programmes such as “Campaigning for Change” , “ social media”
and via collaborations with ActionAid offices, Activista, partner organisations and through multi country campaigns.
Reaching out to grassroots organizations and other movements, to make sure that
our trainings are informed and inspired by the challenges and opportunities they are facing in their long term efforts to create structural changes in society. And
to innovate our training formats, to better fit the needs of the young activists and civil society in the region.
