• UV stands for Ultraviolet
• UV is invisible spectrum of light
• UV has three sub category - UV – A ; UV – B ; UV – C
• UV – C has 253.7 nm peak wavelength
• UV – C is also called as Germicidal
• UV – C has major three Properties
– Germicidal | Ozone Destruction | Advance Oxidation Process [AOP]
- How it Works for Ozone Destruction?

• Ozone is a tri atomic compound of Oxygen “O”
• The two atomic compound is Oxygen “O₂”
• This form of Oxygen “O₂” is very stable
• Ozone is “O₃” & one “O” is very unstable.
• UV – C has an energy.
• When UV-C falls on “O₃” the unstable “O” is very easily be separated, breaking
the inter molecular bond
• This “O” combines with another free “O” and becomes stable “O₂”
• This is the way “O₃” in the water is destructed [converted] from “O₃” to “O₂”.
- What is UV Dose?

• UV dose is a Product of UV intensity at 253.7 nm & Contact time [Exposure Time].
• UV Dose = UV Intensity X Contact Time
[ µW/cm² X Sec. ]
• Measured in “ Microwatts-Seconds per Cm²” [µW-S/cm²] or J/m² or mJ/cm²
• Example = 100 J/m² = 10 mJ/cm² = 10 mW-S/cm² = 10,000 µW-S/cm²
- How to Size UV for Ozone Destruction?

• There are three factors to size/design UV System
– 1. UV Dose 2. % UVT 3. Ozone Concentration
• 1. UV Dose is intensity of UV light & contact time
• 2. % UVT is the % of UV light penetrating water medium, at given distance.
• 3. Ozone concentration is the residual un-dissolved Ozone in the medium [water]

  • 3. - What is UV radiation? 3 • UV stands for Ultraviolet • UV is invisible spectrum of light • UV has three sub category - UV – A ; UV – B ; UV – C • UV – C has 253.7 nm peak wavelength • UV – C is also called as Germicidal • UV – C has major three Properties – Germicidal | Ozone Destruction | Advance Oxidation Process [AOP]
  • 4. - How it Works for Ozone Destruction? 4 • Ozone is a tri atomic compound of Oxygen “O” • The two atomic compound is Oxygen “O₂” • This form of Oxygen “O₂” is very stable • Ozone is “O₃” & one “O” is very unstable. • UV – C has an energy. • When UV-C falls on “O₃” the unstable “O” is very easily be separated, breaking the inter molecular bond • This “O” combines with another free “O” and becomes stable “O₂” • This is the way “O₃” in the water is destructed [converted] from “O₃” to “O₂”.
  • 5. - What is UV Dose? 5 • UV dose is a Product of UV intensity at 253.7 nm & Contact time [Exposure Time]. • UV Dose = UV Intensity X Contact Time [ µW/cm² X Sec. ] • Measured in “ Microwatts-Seconds per Cm²” [µW-S/cm²] or J/m² or mJ/cm² • Example = 100 J/m² = 10 mJ/cm² = 10 mW-S/cm² = 10,000 µW-S/cm²
  • 6. - How to Size UV for Ozone Destruction? 6 • There are three factors to size/design UV System – 1. UV Dose 2. % UVT 3. Ozone Concentration • 1. UV Dose is intensity of UV light & contact time • 2. % UVT is the % of UV light penetrating water medium, at given distance. • 3. Ozone concentration is the residual un-dissolved Ozone in the medium [water]
  • 7. - Components Of UV System 7 • UV Reactor – SS 316 – Sea Water & Ozone Compatible • UV Driver / Ballast – Electronics • High % UVT isolator – Quarts Jacket • Rubber Seals & O-rings – Sea water + UV Radiation + Ozone Compatible

UV Lamp Intensity : 9.0 mW/cm² @ 55.0 mm of 300 W High Intensity Amalgam Lamp UV Reactor Volume : 30 – 32 L % UVT : 80 % Ozone Concentration : 0.4 ppm [G/m³] Ozone Destruct UV Dose : 120 mW-S/cm² [min.] Contact Time : 120 mW-S/cm² / 9.0 mW/cm² = 13.3 Sec. Peak Ozonated [0.4 ppm] : Reactor Volume [L] / Contact Time [Sec.] water Flow Rate = 30 L / 13.3 Sec.= 2.25 LPS = 8.1 m³/hr (300 w UV Lamp)

UV Lamp Intensity : 3.0 mW/cm² @ 50.0 mm of 120 W UV Lamp UV Reactor Volume : 20 – 22 L % UVT : 80 % Ozone Concentration : 0.4 ppm [G/m³] Ozone Destruct UV Dose : 120 mW-S/cm² [min.] Contact Time : 120 mW-S/cm² / 3.0 mW/cm² = 40.0 Sec. Peak Ozonated [0.4 ppm] : Reactor Volume [L] / Contact Time [Sec.] water Flow Rate = 20 L / 40.0 Sec.= 0.5 LPS = 1.8 m³/hr (120 w UV Lamp)

Peak Ozonated [0.4 ppm] : Reactor Volume [L] / Contact Time [Sec.] water Flow Rate = 15 L / 60.0 Sec.= 0.25 LPS = 0.9 m³/hr (80 w UV Lamp)
