In one day the United states consumes, on average, 20 million barrels of oil per day. About 60% is imported from different countries. Given the state of politics the world is in today concerning oil production and its future this puts the united states into a dependent role. So this leads the discussion to the arctic national wildlife refuge or ANWR. This is a protected area in northeastern Alaska which contains 19.8 million acres of land. Of this, there is a section called the “1002 area” which is 1.5 million acres of prospective drilling sites. It holds about 7.7 billion barrels of recoverable crude oil.
