Native People of North America The lives of the Iroquois, Pueblos, Plains, and Northwest Coast Indians.
The Iroquois Consist of 5 tribes: Cayuga Onondaga Seneca Mohawk Oneida Located in cultural region of the Eastern Woodlands.  A cultural region in an area where people with similar ways of life live.
The Iroquois did not get along well and many died. Deganawidah and Hiawatha, two men from different tribes, convinced others to end the fighting.  This lead to the formation of the Iroquios League in 1570. The league had 50 representatives who met once a year at the Great Council of Fire and created laws.  A Violent History
The Iroquois lived in what is now New York state.  They fished, hunted deer and elk, and grew corn, squash and beans.  Lived in longhouses; a building made from saplings and bark of tree.  Over 100 ft. long Several families lived in one building.  Everyday Life
The Iroquois celebrated 6 festivals throughout the year. Sang and danced Gave thanks to their crops and animals they killed Created masks called false faces The masks were used to chase away the evil spirits that caused illness Religion
Include: Hopi Zuni Located in the cultural region of the Southwest Desert, which include what is now Arizona and New Mexico.  The Pueblos
Built villages on top of mesas; kept them safe from enemies Pueblo houses built from rocks and clay Grew corn and cotton Performed ceremonies that they thought would bring rain Kachinas were used in ceremonies. A kachina is a spirit that helps people. There was a special dance to honor the kachinas.  Pueblo Villages

Master woodcarvers; carved totem poles A Totem Pole is a tall post which features carved faces that represent a person’s family and ancestors (people from whom one descended at a distance at a distance of time). Totem Poles
The Kwakiutl and Chinook help a potlach, which is a big party to celebrate an important event Lots of food, singing, dancing, and gift giving Potlach
A shaman is a man or woman who practiced native medicine When a tribe member became sick a shaman was called Shaman perform ceremonies to help the sick feel better Shaman
