Cryo-cell uses the bag collection
method which draws blood from the
severed umbilical cord into a blood-
bag. Blood is also collected from the
mother for screening purposes.
When the cord blood is taken to the
laboratory it is processed using
hydroxyl ethyl starch which isolates the
white blood cell percentage containing
the stem cells.
The cryoprotectant, DMSO, and Dextran
are then added and all of the contents
stored in a compartmentalized cryobag.
The cryobag contains three segments that are used for testing and a 20ml and 5ml sample.
The bag is over-wrapped and subjected to controlled-rate freezing to make it suitable for
long-term storage. In controlled-rate freezing the bag is placed in a protective casing and
placed in Dewar flasks containing liquid nitrogen.
This type of storage should keep the blood feasible for use for decades. The blood taken
from the mother is tested at a laboratory that is approved by the Clinical Laboratory
Improvement Act (CLIA) and registered with the Food and Drug Association. At this lab the
mother’s blood is tested for HIV, CMV, HTLV, hepatitis and syphilis as well as for the absence
of microorganisms. This testing is done to determine if the child’s blood could possibly be
used by relatives.
The samples stored in the bank belong to the parents of the child until said child reaches the
legal age. During this interim, only the parents can decide if the blood should be given to
other relatives or siblings. There is no cost to retrieve the stem cells and when they are
needed, Cryo-Cell Cord Blood Bank will send them in a specialized container that is able to
maintain cryogenic temperatures. Since start-up to February of 2010, all blood grafts coming
from Cryo-Cell Blood Bank have been viable upon thawing and have been used to treat
diseases like cerebral palsy, sickle cell anaemia, neuroblastoma, Hodgkin’s lymphoma and
acute myeloid leukaemia.
