Presenting to you, the Parents' Guide 2019/2020 for James Cook University Singapore!
Brochures often talk about course content and how great the school is. In this guide, I try to show a different side of the university. I showcase alumnus, parents of students and alumni and include a few resources so parents don't have to navigate our incredibly detailed website to understand intakes and enrollment processes.

As you contemplate your child’s next academic move, we
at the Singapore campus of James Cook University (JCU)
bring to you the Parents’ Guide 2019/2020. This is a handy
guide to help you facilitate your decision-making or at the
very least, give you an idea of the options available. In this
year’s edition, we put together stories of graduates who
were inspired by their lecturers and stories of other parents
who are pleased with how an education at JCU is preparing
students for the future.
I hope that you get a better understanding of the university
through these stories and benefit from what our students and
alumni have gone through. With that, I leave you with the
2019/2020 edition of the Parents’ Guide. All of us at JCU
wish the best for our students in their studies and hope to
see you around. Who knows, both you and your child might
just appear in a future edition of our Parents’ Guide!

At the Singapore campus of James Cook
University, we believe that education is a
collaborative process where students and
academics work together in a dynamic
learning environment. Our campus at Sims
Drive is equipped with the latest in teaching
technology, ensuring that classes are held in
an interactive and sophisticated setting.
In this era of a knowledge-based economy, we
expect our students to participate in projects
and activities involving the community, on top
of encouraging them to excel academically.
During their time with us, our students will have
the opportunity to fully develop their talents.
As you will soon discover, a university is
much more than just a place to acquire
knowledge. Today’s graduates are taking up
careers which, in many cases, had not been
conceived a decade ago.

Mrs Maja
Vidanovic
Mila Vidanovic
Mila’s Mother
Bachelor of Arts
(Majoring in Psychology Studies)
Final Year Student
How did you know Mila was suited for
this course?
What has been the impact of a JCU
education on Mila?
How did you guide Mila in the decision
making process?
What is one piece of advice you would give
to parents guiding their child in choosing
a course?
I knew Mila was suited for it because it
would enable her creativity to be expressed,
along with the freedom to share her ideas
and opinions freely - which is what arts is
all about. Mila loves to think deeply and put
herself in other people’s shoes, and since
this is a major in Psychological Studies,
I knew it would be the perfect fit for her
- a combination of arts and psychology -
allowing her to truly be herself.
A JCU education has definitely made
Mila more independent, determined and
motivated. It has challenged her in different
ways, and allowed her to be more productive
in both her studies, and in other aspects of
her life outside of university. It has had a
positive impact on her as it has made her
complete all her tasks on time in the best
of her ability, become a more independent
individual overall, and it is consistently
helping her grow as an individual.
Mila was almost certain she wanted to
enrol in this course, but we sat down and
had a talk about what exactly she wanted
to do and what interested her the most,
and together we came to this conclusion. I
guided her by encouraging her and giving
her advice on which course I thought would
be the best for her. We both looked at the
modules, the various aspects of them, and
she chose which course had topics that
caught her eye and interested her.
One piece of advice would be to let your child
choose what they genuinely desire to do, while
guiding them simultaneously. It is important to
support them and to ensure they consider all
their options before having their mind set on
one course. They should analyse all aspects of
the course and whether it is suitable for them
when it comes to the content, assessment
tasks, and what will keep them passionate and
determined throughout their course.

How did you know Tian was suited for
this course?
How did you guide Tian in the decision
making process?
What has been the impact of a JCU
education on Tian?
What is one piece of advice you would give
to those in a similar position of choosing
a course?
Tian has always had a passion and deep
commitment to serve the underserved in
Society. Tian wanted to understand not only
the psychological needs, the science behind
psychology and aspects of those he plans
to serve, but also himself, as an individual in
the context of a bigger community. The JCU
Psychology program empowered Tian to fulfil
his career aspirations. I believe this course
will allow him to apply his knowledge well in
his career.
I offered Tian encouragement and also
sought out mentors in related professions so
that Tian can seek their advice and guidance
at all times. Tian made his own choice, and
I supported him full-heartedly.
Tian has grown in knowledge, wisdom and
character. JCU has empowered him to enter
his chosen career with confidence and most
importantly, a passion for life-long learning!
JCU has inculcated in Tian a curiosity and
motivation in the continuous pursuit of
knowledge, coupled with a masterly application
of the knowledge, putting it into practice to
benefit those he intends to serve in Society.
Seeking advice form mentors and seniors.
Their insight and experience will be very
valuable in allowing one to consider one’s
choice more holistically.

Hodge
Bachelor of Education
(Early Childhood Education)
2017 Graduate
Assistant Teacher,
Australian International
School
Why did you choose to pursue a degree in
early childhood education?
What did you enjoy most about studying
at JCU?
Do you have any advice for students
deciding on a university program?
How has the professional experience
component of the program prepared you for
the workplace?
I first developed an interest in Early Childhood
Education during my education at United World
College of South East Asia (UWCSEA). Since then
it has been my passion to teach and nurture children
during the early years and provide them with the
solid foundations of understanding and development
that they deserve.
Living in multiracial and multicultural Singapore and
coming myself from a mixed raced and very large
extended family has exposed me to young children
from a complete range of family backgrounds. I believe
that my background has instilled in me the ability to
acknowledge, understand and respect the fact that
all children have equal rights to quality education,
regardless of race, language, culture and religion.
The supportive and inspiring lecturers that provided
us with the fundamental knowledge and guidance I
needed to successfully achieve my goals and prepare
me for my future teaching career. The course modules
were ordered in a manner that gradually developed
our knowledge and understanding in the field. The
lecturers and tutorials for each module were given
as a cohesive session, which allowed us to learn in
multimodal ways, making them both informative and
engaging. In addition, the course offered a great deal
of practical experience which allowed me to be fully
immersed in a teaching settings in various international
school both locally and abroad.
Choose a degree you truly want to take, as you
should genuinely enjoy the whole experience and
learning process, to foster a positive growth mindset
for your future career. Check the program has all the
modules, experiences and options that you want.
Considering that you will be making a 2 to 3 year
commitment (minimum) to your respective course, it’s
important that it is something you truly wish to pursue
for the years ahead.
The Professional Experience aspect of the
course is one that particularly stands out. The
course provided me with a plethora of teaching
experiences across a range of well-established
international schools both in Singapore and
Australia. This bestowed me with valuable
knowledge, understandings and skills, that I
gained through observing and actively participating
in classroom activities under supervising teachers,
paired with the opportunity to teach as the lead
teacher for their whole class. These hands-on
experiences were extremely helpful in gaining
insight and knowledge into the teaching world! I
have since been able to test, practice, reflect and
refine my teaching methods and strategies to add
to my repertoire. Furthermore, these placements
were at schools with different international
curriculums and we had the opportunity to teach
various different age groups across the spectrum
of our degree.

Why did you choose to pursue an
Honours program?
How would you describe your experience
at JCU in one word?
How has your time in JCU prepared you
for your current job?
What is one piece of advice you
would give to students considering a
university education?
I chose psychology as it provides a unique
position for me to understand different
fields that span childhood development,
organizational behavior and research.
Enriching. Besides academic pursuit, I was
involved in clubs & societies- specifically the
Christian Fellowship. It was there that I formed
fond memories and meaningful friendships.
Learning is an ongoing process in my current
job. I would say that my experience at JCU has
provided me a sound foundation for research and
allowed me to apply what I have learnt.
Learning is a skill and at the same time, a
process. My advice is to embrace the different
challenges and experiences. Learn from both
your failures and your successes. Learning truly
never stops.

HOT TOPIC - PSYCHOLOGY
Three things you probably
didn't know about psychology
By Dr Jonathan Ramsay
Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind and behaviour. It is a fascinating
and varied subject encompassing everything from theories of effective leadership and
interpersonal attraction to diagnoses and treatment of psychological disorders. This
variation means it is difficult to provide a single definition of what a psychologist is
and what exactly it is that they do.
If you are considering enrolling your child into a psychology degree programme, here
are a few key pieces of information that will help you make a more informed decision.
A practitioner is someone who “practices”
a particular discipline or profession,
meaning that they apply psychological
principles to help individuals or groups in
a real-world context.
While many psychologists are practitioners,
many are better characterised as researchers.
This means that they use the scientific
method to generate and test theories that
can explain some aspect of the mind or
human behaviour.
Not all psychologists are practitioners
702201 - Parent's Guide Booklet -05.indd 9 17/9/19 4:17 PM
11. Parents’
Guide
pg 10
Beyond the researcher-practitioner
distinction, there are many different
specialisations within the field of psychology.
In the research camp, social psychologists
seek to explain how their thoughts and
behaviours are influenced by the social
context (i.e., other people), whereas cognitive
psychologists study mental processes such
as attention, memory, and perception. In
the practitioner camp, clinical psychologists
seek to understand and treat mental
dysfunction, while educational psychologists
seek to understand and improve learning in
various settings.
HOT TOPIC - PSYCHOLOGY
There are many different sub-fields
of psychology
Statistics is important
Undergraduate and postgraduate psychology
programs offered at the Singapore campus
of James Cook University are accredited
by the Australian Psychology Accreditation
Council (APAC). The postgraduate programs
also provide a pathway for registration as a
psychologist in both Singapore and Australia.
Students tend to assume that psychology
is an “essay-based” subject and hence
doesn’t involve much mathematics.
Unfortunately this isn’t true. While some
types of psychologists do engage in
qualitative research, the majority (both
practitioners and researchers) take a
quantitative approach, meaning that
they gather numeric data and analyse it
in order to make decisions and derive
insight. Statistics is particularly useful in
this regard.

pg 11 HOT TOPIC -
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
In an increasingly competitive business
landscape, companies are quickly realizing
that being sustainable is more than just
a mere gesture. Major multinational
companies such as DuPont, Unilever and
Toyota have taken pro-active steps to
invest heavily in making greener products
and greening their processes.
But why does this matter to businesses?
Most Singaporeans would remember the
haze situation in 2015 where the PSI
shot up to 471, putting it in the Very
Hazardous range. In response to the haze,
major supermarkets like NTUC FairPrice
and Sheng Shiong withdrew all paper
products sourced from Asia Pulp & Paper
Group, one of the 4 companies linked to
the record-breaking haze that affected
the country.

What Science Knows,
and What Business Does

13. Parents’

pg 12HOT TOPIC -
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
It is clear that environmental issues
matter to businesses simply because
the public is aware of them and are
increasingly intolerant of wastage and bad
environmental behavior.
This sentiment is growing so strong
that it is altering consumer behavior.
It is becoming increasingly clear that
businesses that are able to handle
concerns about climate change, increased
urbanization and loss of ecosystems or
food security and health in a rapidly
changing world will be the ones ending
up ahead of their competitors. This has
resulted in a new demand for a workforce
that is equipped to navigate this changing
business landscape.
At the Singapore campus of James Cook
University, the Bachelor of Business and
Environmental Science program straddles
both business and science. Half the
subjects students have to cover are focused
on core business concepts while the other
half focuses on scientific concepts, theories
and their application. It produces students
that are “bilingual” in both business and
science, who are able to then integrate
concepts from both disciplines to solve
problems in the real world.
With companies now seeking to fill up
roles in this area, students with the
ability to bridge the business-science
gap will gain an edge in the increasingly
competitive workforce.

pg 13 HOT TOPIC - AQUACULTURE
Securing Singapore's
Food Security
Through Aquaculture
The United Nations Food and Agriculture
organisation has estimated that 70 percent
of the world’s fish population is either
fully used, overused or in crisis. With
that in mind, more than half of the high
quality seafood we consume will need
to come from sustainable sources such
as aquaculture.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration in the United States estimates
that 50 percent of all seafood produced
for human consumption is supplied by
aquaculture and that number is expected
to rise in the years to come. That, together
with the fact that Singapore has identified
the development of its own aquaculture
capabilities as a key step towards ensuring
food security has led to a growing demand
for graduates with skill sets in aquaculture.
At JCU, certain aquaculture elective subjects
give students the opportunity for hands-on
learning in the field. During these field trips,
they get the chance to visit aquaculture
facilities locally to get practical fish husbandry
training. On top of that, students also have
the option to embark on a 10 day field trip
to Vietnam to experience commercial farm
systems and practice farming techniques.
Singapore has also shown an interest in
improving its food security and it seeks
to do this partially by increasing food fish
production to 15 percent of domestic
consumption. However, this ramp up in
production will need to be sustainable
economically, environmentally and socially.
For that to be possible, the industry needs
to move from qualified people to lead
innovations and provide high-tech solutions.
702201 - Parent's Guide Booklet -05.indd 13 17/9/19 4:17 PM
15. Parents’
Guide
pg 14HOT TOPIC - AQUACULTURE
However, existing aquaculture-related
job positions are not only limited to
being just a fish, shrimp or kelp farmer.
Most Singaporeans are more familiar
with the coastal aquaculture fish farms
colloquially known as ‘kelongs’. This
are generally still very much cottage
industries, but fish farms have started
to go high tech. There are farms which
are embracing artificial intelligence and
automation. Some even going so far as
to intensify aquaculture production in-
land with multi-story tanks to increase
their yield.
S o m e o f t h e p o s s i b l e ro l e s f o r
graduates include being a manager of
a production facility, aquatic animal
health specialist, fish health officer,
feed formulation technologist and agri-
tech developer. Being a growth industry,
many of these job titles might be
new to most Singaporeans. However,
with the increased emphasis on food
security, they will certainly be more
common place in the years to come.

pg 15 FIELD TRIPS
Opportunities for Learning
Beyond the Classroom
When it comes to higher education,
many would naturally think of academic
excellence. However, a well-rounded
education should go beyond that. It
should go beyond academic achievement
and prepare students to navigate the real
world after they graduate.
At James Cook University, this philosophy
drives us to integrate authentic learning
strategies into our curriculum. Students are
encouraged to see how theories learnt in
the classroom can be practically applied to
real world scenarios when they embark on
fieldwork. Through fieldwork, students also
pick up important life values that empowers
them to grow in a holistic manner.
The Tropical Marine and Ecology and Coastal
Impacts module involves a 10 day field trip to
Phuket, Thailand. The subject provides hands-
on learning experiences that immerse students
in the local environment. This enables them
to develop a deep understanding of human
impacts on marine coastal assemblages in
the Andaman Sea and the marine organisms
and habitats effected.
During the field trip, students visit fish
landing ports and aquaculture facilities to
observe practices in the real world. They
also visit both protected and non-protected
habitats such as coral reefs and mangroves
enabling them to understand real world
issues and management practices.

pg 16FIELD TRIPS
That is not to say that the traditional
learning modes are done away with though.
There are lectures, presentations and group
research projects to work on in the evenings.
In line with the hands-on nature of the
fieldwork, students are required to write a
project report to be submitted at the end
of the trip. This carries more weightage
than the exam and allows for a deeper
appreciation for the subject matter. Through
these real-world learning and assessment
methods, students develop the skills to
critically evaluate information from a variety
of sources and quickly synthesise ideas.
This is exactly how problems need to be
solved in real life.

Beyond the field trips to sunny beaches, business students from JCU have collaborated
with German students from Duale Hochschule Baden-Württemberg, an institution of
higher learning in Germany to research on shared services in Asia. Students visited a
shared service centres in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, studying their processes and
wrote papers to improve the processes. The papers were edited by their lecturers and
compiled into a book titled “Management of Shared Service Centres in Asia: Examples
from Malaysia and Singapore”. These students were credited in the book, providing
tangible proof of their learning that they can show to prospective employers upon
graduation. The book is currently available on Amazon.

pg 17 INTER CAMPUS MOBILITY
Studying abroad can be a once in a
lifetime experience. Besides experiencing
what school is like in another education
system, students also get the opportunity
to immerse themselves in a different culture,
make new friends abroad and explore new
places and interests. However, being based
overseas for extended periods of time may
not be for everyone. For those who want
the best of both worlds, JCU’s Inter-Campus
Mobility program allows students from the
Singapore campus to study abroad in JCU’s
Australian campuses.
The Inter-Campus Mobility program is a
great opportunity for students to spend up
to two semesters at our Townsville and
Cairns campuses in Australia while remaining
as a Singapore campus student.

Making the transition to university life can
be a challenging process for some students.
Instead of being presented with a standard
set of notes to follow, students often are
given greater autonomy and have to engage
in self-directed learning. Being in a university
setting, there is also an expectation that
they have to take the initiative to look for
assistance when they face any difficulties
with their studies.
This sudden sense of responsibility may be
overwhelming for students as they begin
their life in university.
LEARNING SUPPORT
At JCU, we recognize that some students
may need help with this transition and
have set up a Learning Support team
dedicated to helping students cope with
the demands of university education. Made
up of specialist in English language and
mathematics, the team is easily accessible
with a consultation room called the Learning
Zone where students can seek the help
of advisors. Appointments can be made
for one-on-one consultations with advisors
or if preferred, via email and even Skype

At JCU, we recognize that a university
education is more than just about academic
excellence. This is why we aim to enrich
every student’s experience with non-
academic activities on and off campus.
There are many clubs and societies students
can join to meet new people, have fun
and make lifelong friends while taking a
much needed break from the pressures of
studying. Not only that, taking part in these
activities will help students discover their
own interests and talents while developing
skills useful in work and life after graduation.

Three Things
to Note
Before Applying
Our students must meet the minimum entry requirements (MER) for the course.
These MERs are available on the respective course web pages. However, we
understand that there are many education options available and we may not have
covered all bases on the web page. In such a situation, you may get in touch
with our student recruitment department to make an enquiry.
Get the right information, straight from the source. We encourage
parents to make an appointment for a course consultation where
we can discuss related issues such as the education and career
pathways for their child.
Bringing academic transcripts and certificates
when you meet our team for a consultation allows
for a more productive session as we can provide
accurate information.
