Question
What happens when you push or pull?

Engage
Students will play Talking Chips in groups of 5.  Each group member will talk 
about what they know about force and motion. 

Explore
Follow the Push or Pull post­it note activity (from website above) and completing 
the Push/Pull chart. (See Attached page)

Explain
     *Have students stand with their chair in front of them.  Ask them why the 
       chair is not moving.
     *Discuss how to start objects moving with a push or pull force.
     *Have students discuss how people machines, magnets or nature (wind, 
       water) pushes and pulls

MEAP Assessment Clarifications
  • Force is a push or a pull on an object or substance.
  • Examples of forces are gravity and pushes and pulls caused by people, 
    machines, magnets, or nature (wind and water).
  • A push moves an object away from another object and a pull moves an object 
    toward another object.

Students fill in the claims/evidence page with sticky notes and outside observations

Elaborate 
Follow the Performance Event: Push­Pull Venn Diagram activity from above 
website.

Evaluate
Use the What I Learned about Push and Pull page.  Have students use their clams/
evidence page to help them write their explanations.

Help students come up with statement using the lesson question.
Starter Statement:  I learned that I use force to push and pull (then the claims and 
evidence to support statement)

Vocabulary
