- Cindy: shortcomings of research for GMO issue, council using “debate” instead of “dialogue” for discussions; consensus wasn’t reached, but voices were heard. Pam: FTS research that created the Directory and facts for HKHE, NMFAPC “dialogue” for consensus, NMFAPC approved Pam & team to represent them during Legislature
- Pam: 2009 is a “no money” year….so we work on amending Anti-Donation clause, memorials, etc Nationally: food/farming issues are “elevated”, in the public’s mind w/ Healthcare & Economics Local land policies following the wake of statewide policy for transferable tax credits for land conservation Build a “progressive block” vs choosing bi-partisan issues: CCP? NMCV? etc
- Pam: HKHE-benefits kids nutritionally, academically and farmers economically, platform for incumbents, market for dept of Ag, cross pollinate FSDs and Schools – present HKHE briefing sheet and begin to bring in other materials Cindy: gmo sugarbeet - contentious first issue, created divide; not everyone will be on board - is it still a win-win?
- Cindy: underserved communities; what can your group do to increase board/council training for underrepresented groups - Boulder County example: PERLA - People Engaged in Raising Leaders, a board and commission training program for underrep. people. How to keep partners in the loop when they have limited staff or geographic barriers, etc.
- Cindy: have people on-board outside partners to provide “political cover” to those folks making tough decisions on your council. ?? T&P: Bring in examples - handouts
- Cindy: example of our public hearing when talking pts were not used - gave a perception of not being credible. talking pts give appearance of united front.
- T & P Example: When someone tries to amend or sabotage our legislation. When your bill gets held up due to someone else’s politics.
- Cindy: have a plan for bringing new voices to your movement P & T: Senate amendments that killed our bill. Have to know when you have to give in and when you don’t (Jennings amendment – we said “no”) Senator Feldman – Took the $ home
- Cindy: Drake is updating their Food Policy Councils site: http://www.law.drake.edu/centers/agLaw/?pageID=fpcDataBase World Hunger Year and, of course, the CFSC. I do like NCSL.
