In my group newscast, we have used several conventions such as headlines, theme music and stories. Usually most newscasts consist off hard news and then carries on with soft news. As a group we decided to use a similar structure which is evident in my group newscast.A way in which my group has challenged conventions in the newscast is Agony Aunt. We have used this idea because It’s different , It’s not something you would find in normal a radio station . It’s been used to engage our audience & allow more people to become more interactive with our radio station . We have also developed the convention of sound effects with regards to stories that are presented. We as a group added different sound effects for our radio station to make it appealing and suitable for our target audience which is 16-20. We have included music to the stories to make it more interesting for our audience to listen to. Another way we have developed the convention of ournewscast is the theme tune. We challenged the way other newscasts would use their theme tune to grab the attention of our audience.
The stories used in my group newscast represents homosexuals, men and young people. Homosexual people are represented as being emotional. An example for this is when the rylan story is presented it mentions about his hystreical crying giving the audience the impression that homosexuals are emotional. Men are represented as being successful and active we know this because of the stories one pound fish man and the march. The One pound fish man is about a guy called MuhammedSyedNazir who sells fish for a pound , he is represented as being active and successful because he sells fish and he has also had a 10 million hit on youtube to show that he is succesful. If we talk about the story at the march , men are also presented as being active because there out on a march to get their voices and opinions heard. The youth in my radio station are represented as being vunerable because they are not aware of opportunities available to them. This is evident in my radio station where my team member hannah mentions someone call in for help and advice about job opportunities for young people.
The audience for our media production is the age group between 16 to 20. We have decided to include stories that this age group would enjoy for example: the one pound fish man story because everyone will have an idea of who he is as he has already been a part of one of the UK’s biggest shows, Britians Got Talent. We decided that because weare young presenters we would focus on young people and include stories which will interest them for example; latest gossip. We wanted to present stories ranging from diverse ethnicities and cultural backgrounds which is why we have stories such as Rylan and the one pound fish man.To find out what stories our specific age group wanted to hear we conducted a survey usingsurvey monkey. This helped us to realise what it is that our audience prefer.
The way my group TrioFm attracted / adressed audience is by having an outside broadcast, a vox pop, and voice clips from interviews in order to keep our audience engaged. As a group we made sure that our stories were not too long so that our audience don’t loose interest quickly. The way that news is presented is an area we found was important this is why we decided we would have more than one presenter who will be informal and laid back because of the target audience we have. The idea of having an agony aunt is to allow our audience to be a part of our radio station allowing them to feel important and have their views and opinions taken to account. We have also used entertaining stories and added background music that match with the story that is presented to grab the attention of the audience.
There are several different technologies which I have learnt about for example; Survey monkey- Making my own survey to get the views and opinions of young people about what they wanted to hear in my radio station. I learnt how to use the IMAC Digital radio- radio receiver and transmitter implementations that are based on digital signal processing, but may transmit or receive analog radio transmission standards, for example FM radio. analogue radio. I also learnt how to use audacity on the computer to add sound effects to my radio station.
I have learnt many different things from the pleminiary task to the main task such as ;Ethical guide of journalismHow the radio worksUnderstanding what a vox pop and outside broadcast is.What news values and sound codes are.How radio’s actually work and the different elements needed in a radio station.
