4. Use of PVC for windows frame
Frames of different materials have been
assessed on the basis of their production,
energy consumption and environmental
impacts.
The investigation shows that
aluminium and PVC frames exhibit
large amounts of
environmental burdens. Accelerated
ageing tests have been carried out to test
the
durability of windows against weathering
impacts. These tests show that
aluminium clad timber windows are
comparatively least affected by
environmental impacts.
9. PVC - Common Additives
Anti-oxidants – stop degradation from presence of oxygen
Anti-static agents – avoid buildup of static electrical charge
Catalysts – in polymerizing process
Chemical blowing agents – create foamed products
Flame retardants
Heat stabilizers – slows polymer breakdown (degradation)
Impact modifiers and processing aids
-- impact modifiers: increase resistance to stress
-- processing aids: increase melting rate of resin
Lubricants –prevent resin from sticking to production equip.
Plasticizers – softening agents
Ultraviolet light stabilizers
10. Phthalates
Phthalates – used as plasticizers – not binded in
PVC - can release from plastic
(e.g. phthalates, adipates)
Phthalates
Group of 40 chemicals, 6 most hazardous
chemicals prohibited to use in toys and/or
childcare products and cosmetics (DEHP, DBP,
BBP, DIDP, DINP, DNOP)
Negative impacts: reproductive health, endocrine
disruptors, kidneys, liver, lungs, asthma, alergies

Cooperation with: Mother‘s centers,
kindergardens, hospitals, local authorities
on replacement / phase out of PVC / PVC
audits, PVC free coalition
Round tables with food industry,
supermarkets etc.
