With the increase in blended and online course delivery there are ongoing challenges for supporting staff and students in the use of teaching technologies. This presentation will look at the University of Newcastle's implementation of a third-party building block for Blackboard which provides access to: data to measure tool adoption; tools to promote technologies within Blackboard courses; and support tools designed to improve end-user experiences. 'Eesysoft' provides simple, just-in-time reporting tools that are being used by Instructional Designers to develop targeted workshops and consultations for academic staff within Schools and Faculties where it has been identified that adoption could be improved. When new technologies are introduced, Eesysoft's communication tools are being used to promote features from within the online course environment. Staff and students now have access to resources that are specific to the location within the Blackboard course that they are accessing. It is hoped that Eesysoft will provide the necessary tools and data to influence change in the way academic staff adopt Blackboard tools for blended and online courses.

The SYNERGY Induction to Pedagogy programme was created by project partners, with the aim of helping micro-enterprise owners using the SYNERGY Exchange platform, to engage in peer-to-peer learning opportunities. This training programme comprises six modules and is delivered over 5 hours through a series of video lectures and PowerPoints which have been written, developed and recorded by project partners. These modules provide micro-enterprise owners with a sound understanding of the basics in relation to e-didactics, quality criteria of peer-learning, evaluation of online learning resources and online learning environments, producing quality learning resources for peers and other knowledge that has helped them to become competent and confident online peer-educators. This module is entitled ‘Evaluation of the Environment’ and provides content which relates to self and peer assessments, some challenges of peer-learning in online environments and quality criteria in peer learning. These slides are available in English, Finnish, German, Greek, Italian and Romanian.

Jennifer Imazeki, Economics Scaffolded Writing and Reviewing in the Disciplines(SWoRD) is a web-based peer-review system. One of the primary innovations of SWoRD, relative to other peer review tools, is the scoring algorithm through which peer review scores are converted into student grades for both writing and reviewing. In this session, I will discuss my experience with SWoRD, which I used in Spring 2011 for an upper-division writing course for economics majors, replacing my previous system of ‘manual’ peer review (i.e., students swapping papers)

With class sizes increasing, it is becoming increasingly difficult to support research and writing activities. The extra workload associated with grading, checking assignments, and providing support outside of the classroom can become overwhelming. Through my experience in the Course Design Institute, I have learned about several tools that will be useful for increasing research and writing activities while maintaining a manageable workload. I have incorporated the use of online tools to support writing activities in a large undergraduate course, including Blackboard, Google Docs, and Wimba Classroom. In this session I will describe what worked and what didn’t work, and I will provide a brief demonstration of the techniques that have been most useful.
