assignment by leading customer experience and capital planning for AT&T Partner
Exchange focused on pre-sales and post-sales experience, API enhancements,
operational readiness and financial operations. Prior to AT&T, Gary worked in the
areas of software systems engineering, technology consulting, and project
management.

Panel Member – Aaron J. Ferguson, Ph.D
Deputy Technical Director, Enterprise Discovery Operations
CURRENT POSITION: Appointed to the Defense Intelligence Senior Level (DISL) in
March 2014, Dr. Aaron J. Ferguson is currently serving as the Deputy Technical
Director of the Enterprise Discovery Operations (EDO) Group in the Directorate of
Operations. Dr. Ferguson brings extraordinary vision and expertise earning him a
reputation for making the implausible plausible. His professionalism and dedication to
the NSA mission transcends the technical and extends to his ability to mentor,
develop and prepare individuals from all missions and disciplines. Dr. Ferguson’s
specialties include: Machine/Deep Learning, Data Science, Big Data Analytics,
Applied Statistics, and Software Engineering.
PRIOR POSITIONS: Aaron began his career at NSA in 1997 tackling a wide-range of
technical cybersecurity challenges. Before arriving in EDO, he was the Deputy
Technical Director of the Fusion, Analysis, and Mitigations Deputy Directorate in IAD.
In this role he was responsible for providing technical direction to the development
and deployment of Analytics in support of Information Assurance analysis. His two
most incredibly rewarding assignments were as Technical Director of the Joint
Mitigation Strategy Planning Division in the NTOC and as Technical Director of the
Analytic Tradecraft Office (ATAO) in IAD. He is a proud 2012 graduate of NSA’s
Senior Technical Development Program (STDP) where he focused on Insider Threat
Detection and Analysis. During his STDP program he completed external tours at
Raytheon Systems and DoD Cyber Crime Center (DC3), both focused on designing
methodologies and deploying analytic capabilities to characterize user cyber
observables and predict the likelihood of a user having malicious intent.
Panel Member – Aaron J. Ferguson, Ph.D
Deputy Technical Director, Enterprise Discovery Operations
In 2006, he was selected to be a Technical Leader in the Office of Advanced Network
Operations (ANO-the predecessor to IAD’s Remote and Deployed Operations
Group). In this role, he successfully guided the software capability development
mission that enabled successful “hunting” operations on U.S. Government classified
networks. From 2003 to 2006, Aaron was the NSA Visiting Professor at the United
States Military Academy at West Point in New York where he taught Computer
Science courses and performed Information Assurance-related research. An applied
researcher at heart, Aaron speaks internationally on topics related to Machine
Learning, Data Science and Big Data analytics.
EDUCATION: Aaron graduated from “the Real HU,” Howard University (Washington,
DC) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. He also graduated
from the University of New Haven (New Haven, CT) with a Master of Science in
Operations Research. He continued his graduate work at the University of Delaware
where he received a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Mathematics
and Statistics.
Panel Member – Aaron J. Ferguson, Ph.D
Deputy Technical Director, Enterprise Discovery Operations
PERSONAL: Aaron is a very active mentor and advocate at NSA. In addition to the
challenges provided by the Intelligence Community and the Department of Defense
(DoD), Aaron serves as an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Computer
Science at Howard University and at the University of Maryland University College
(UMUC) where he teaches courses in Information Systems and Computer Science,
respectively.
He has been a member of several doctoral dissertation committees. Dr. Ferguson
has a “healthy but maniacal” addiction to basketball (coaching, playing, and
officiating) and spends his copious free time analyzing NBA data in preparation for his
post-NSA career as an NBA Data Scientist (he hopes). Dr. Ferguson loves to bowl
but is not very good. As a native New Yorker (Brooklyn), he is an unapologetic fan of
the New York Yankees, Knicks, and Giants and has a special place in his heart for
drivers who do not use their signal when making lane changes (smile).
