After reviewing these materials, you can print this presentation to use it as a guide for completing the assignment. This tutorial assumes you are using Microsoft Office 2007 software installed on a Windows XP computer. These instructions will generally apply to most Windows-based computers.
In this assignment you will:
- Create a Microsoft Word document
- Save your paper with the proper file name
- Write a 1 page paper
- Post your finished paper to Blackboard
Step One: Create a Microsoft Word document
Go to the “Start” button at the bottom left of your computer screen. Select “All Programs”, then Microsoft Office, and then select “Microsoft Office Word 2007”, which will open the word processor application with a blank document.
Step Two: Save your paper with the proper file name
When starting a new document, it is a good practice to name and save your file before you start to write extensively. This will also make it easier for you to be in the habit of regularly saving your work by simply using the shortcuts such as Ctrl-S.
First you must create the proper file name format. You might want to use a piece of scratch paper to write this out before entering it in the computer. The file name should include the date, your last name, and project title. The date should be done in “Reverse Date Format”. This means you enter the last 2 digits of the year, followed by the 2 digit month, followed by the 2 digit day.
For example, October 28, 2010 would look like: 101028.
As an example, my project today is “Lesson One”, so my completed file name will be:
YYMMDD_Lastname_Project Title = 101028_Swaim_Lesson One
To save your file, select the Office Button at the top left of the screen, select “Save”. A small screen called a pop-up window will be displayed. In the data entry area call “File name:” type you file name you just created.
After the date and before the project title you enter the underscore character to separate the pieces of the file name. To enter this character, you hold down the Shift key and then press the dash key, which is the key to the left of the key with the equal sign.
Step Three: Write a 1 page paper
For this assignment, you are to write a one-page paper. Distance learning classes regularly require you to complete research and assignments based on your schedule. Since our distance learning class does not meet at specific days and times like a traditional class on campus, we describe students as being “self-determined learners”. Your assignment is to write a one-page paper based on your ideas about the importance of being a self-directed learner related to your being successful in this and other distance learning classes.
Be sure to save you paper before closing Microsoft Word!
Step Four: Post your finished paper to Blackboard
Log into you Blackboard account and navigate to our class. Select the “Week One” button and scroll down to the “Lesson One” assignment. Click on the “Lesson One” title.
This will take you to the “Upload Assignment: Lesson One” screen. Scroll down the screen until you see the “Browse for Local File” button. Click on that button and you will see a pop-up window that will allow you to navigate to where your saved Word file is. Select your file so the name is in the “File Name:” window, and click on the “Open” button. This will upload your file name to Blackboard.
Next click on the “Submit” button, which will complete sending your file to Blackboard.
You will then see a “Submission History” page with a green bar near the top informing you that your assignment is complete.
If you would like to print this page you can, otherwise press the “Ok” button.
Congratulations!
You are finished with this assignment and can log out of Blackboard or go on to another activity.
