2. Our Education System
Thank you everyone for joining us today.
We are really excited to talk to you about our new launch today.
Before we begin, let’s take a look at this picture. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. This is our education system. The image shows a classroom
with a bunch of kids and teacher teaching the class and students intently listening. Such a happy picture.
In fact this is the image that you will see in every school in India and abroad. You will see this in every tuition centre. And this must be working out very
good for our students. In fact, it should be working so good, that this has not changed for years, in fact for centuries!
3. Education is broken
Low marks
Weak foundations
Bored & Demotivated
But is it? We think the education system is broken. Not just us, whenever we talk to Parents, they seem to agree with us. Now why do they say that? The
single largest problem that comes out is that most students are not scoring well. Most parents have complain that their student is not getting good
grades. And grades are important. It is only fair that we begin to measure the success of the education system by how well our students are scoring!
If you look at the problem a bit closer in detail. We all know that no student wants to score low marks. Every one wants to be a winner, a topper. Most
student struggle with scoring because of unresolved gaps in knowledge. Because they have weak foundations. This problem gets quickly gets
compounded as the students progresses through multiple grades without having these gaps strengthened! Let’s go a bit further. What happens when you
add the pressure of marks and success in school on top of a weak foundations. Students get bored, lose motivation and studying has suddenly become a
stressful activity.
!
None of this is news. There has been a lot of talk in recent years about the reducing stress in our education system. The CBSE has moved away from marks
to a grade based system. The board exams have been made optional for grade X students. Has this all worked. No.
!
We believe there is a simple truth behind all the chaos. The truth that every child is different.
4. Every child is different
Let’s look at an example. This is Amit. Amit is a class VI student from a leading school in Jaipur. Amit has not been doing very well in Maths over the last
few years and is increasingly finding it hard. In the process he has started hating Maths. He cannot also sit for more than 15-20 mts to study and his
parents are very concerned about his performance in class VI.
!
This is his classmate Divya. Divya is a very sincere student and puts in a lot of hard work. She has no trouble concentrating in her studies. However, her
parents believe that she can score better than what she is currently doing. She is a smart student and her parents are hoping that her marks increase in
class VI.
!
Both Divya and Amit’s problems look similar enough. Let’s look a bit closer to understand why the two of them are so different!
5. How is every child different?
Learning Styles
Pace of learning
Skill levels
Let’s look at how different students tend to prefer different learning styles. Amit might learn better when he is able to relate new concepts to real world
examples. So when you introduce Amit to discounts, he might learn better when you relate it to his last purchase at the Mall. Ask him what he had bought
in his last visit and the price for which he has purchased. On the other hand Divya, might prefer getting into the formulae and definition of Selling Price,
Buying price and Discount Percentage and move onto practicing problems.
!
Similarly students might have different learning pace. Like I had mentioned earlier Amit gets bored easily and hence could respond better to a fast paced
style. Divya might absorb things better at a slower, more detailed teaching.
!
Different students also have different skills levels across concepts. This is a very important factor when students are exposed to advanced level concepts
that builds on the foundations. This again varies significantly across students and must be taken into account.
6. How do we solve this?
Every teacher needs to be an amazing teacher
Every student needs his own personal teacher
The education experience needs to be fun
7. Technology + Mentorship = Success
State-of-the-art centre
Highly qualified mentors
Personalized study program
I am happy to announce the launch of Meritnation Centre for Excellence, across 4 centres in Jaipur. Our centres for excellence bring a highly personalized
1to1 learning experience to students by combining the power of technology and experience of highly qualified mentors.
!
Our centres are designed from the ground up to maximise personalised attention to our students. This includes everything from the physical layout of the
centre to the delivery and instruction format of study material. The study material, videos, tests and assessments used in the centre have been developed
by our panel of highly qualified subject matter experts that are trusted and used by over 65 lakh students across the world. But as we saw with Divya and
Amit, its not about just having the right content. The program that we have developed to be used in our centres ensure that each student is exposed to
content best suited to her/his needs to maximise learning. The program is also naturally built to match a student’s pace of learning. In effect, two students
who joined at the same time, like Divya and Amit, might actually be going through the course in different speeds and even exposed to different content,
that was best suited for them!
8. Welcome
In fact our program’s differentiation starts right from our admission process. Our free diagnostic test assesses a student’s fundamental concepts that are
required to succeed in his current class. This helps us identify and create a unique blueprint of every student’s skill levels and map it to our concept maps.
!
Each student has their own username and password for their account and on login, a SMS similar to the one shown here will be sent to the parents.
!
In fact, let’s take a quick look to see how our program works.
9. Flashback
The program is divided in to 5 sections for each chapter. As Amit is about to study Fractions today, we start the session with a small quiz to assess his skill
levels on prerequisite concepts. We get a small readiness report of sorts that shows us his relative strengths in the various topics. As we can see, he has
gotten 100% in Topic 1, while 70%, 60% and 60% in topics 2, 3 and 4. Amit, will now be taught by the program on these topics as they are crucial for his
understanding of Fractions.
!
10. Concept Builder
Our second module, the concept builder will now help Amit brush up on concepts that he would have learnt in previous grades. We can see the questions
that Amit had attempted from this topic in the Flashback test with the correct and wrong responses marked using red and green colours. Different
students require different amounts of time to go through this phase. Some might just need a quick revision as the student might have forgotten some of
the concepts due to the gap in time. Others might need more time as they might not have understood some of these concepts even the first time around.
We typically observe that most students, at least in the case of a few chapters, have some pretty serious gaps that were not filled in their previous grades.
!
In a system that gives the flexibility of self-paced studying, it is important that are adequate checks and balances. We call this Assured Learning. All of our
modules inherently have this thought process built-in. As you can see Amit cannot proceed to the next topic until he gets all the questions correct.
Research also shows that there is significant value in asking students to re-attempt, incorrectly answered questions as it improves the students confidence
and acts as a positive reinforcement. We have seen this when working with our students and were very pleased with the results to bake it into the product.
11. Study Material
After having identified his gaps and spent adequate time to get proficient in them, Amit can now move onto studying Fractions. All our study material is
carefully structured with a mixture of text, in plain & simple language, videos, powerful animations to explain key concepts and solved examples.
!
Every chapter is broken into multiple topics so as to match the curriculum followed by student’s board and school. At the end of every chapter, the
student is presented with a 5 question topic test. As in the case of the flashback test, this test is a formative test that tells the program and the moderators
the student’s comfort level with the topic that he has just been introduced to. This also opens up an opportunity for the moderators to intervene as
needed and help the student along. The moderator can also course correct, if needed, and unlock more topics for the student or have personal sessions
to help the student. The moderator also assigns personalised worksheets for homework in the student’s weak areas cases where she feels the need for
more practice.
12. Fun n learn
The next section, as the name suggests is the most sought after by our students. In order to ensure the right mix of passive instruction and active
participation, all of our chapters have an interactive activities section as part of the program.
!
Each activity is either a single or a group of questions that have a very flexible format to test the student’s understanding in a topic. Most activities have a
subtle story based context like help Amy cross the river or help Ram feed his goats. Again, all activities are unlocked sequentially and Amit cannot
proceed until he answers all questions correctly.
!
Any place our students get stuck in the program, our friendly moderators are watching nearby to intervene and help.
13. Chapter test
The last section of the program is a 30-40 minute chapter test. This test is carefully structured to match the standards set by the boards. At the end of the
test, an email report and SMS is automatically sent to the parents. As I had mentioned before, we believe in full transparency and acknowledge the
importance of equipping our parents with actionable and timely information.
!
14. Reports
The chapter test report is an important phase for the parents and the moderators. It provides an opportunity to the moderators to make any course
corrections including adding extra classes for the student or by assigning extra practice questions. All this information is also saved and tracked against
the students profile for a year-end assessment.

16. Gamification
This year, we are also launching a rewards program for our students. Students are given rewards at the end of every month on the basis of a number of
easy to achieve targets. These range from having a perfect attendance record to consistently scoring high in a subject. These rewards can be redeemed by
students at the end of the month for a roster of student friendly rewards like books, puzzles and board games
!
The rewards program, not only helps in rewarding positive behavior in students but also adds a lot of fun and friendly competition to the program.
18. Our student love us
Tanmay joined Meritnation five months back. His journey here has been
wonderful. He loves coming to Meritnation. The concept is excellent as it

We are really very excited about our launch in Jaipur. The initial response has been truly overwhelming with over 100 students who have visited our centre
and taken our free diagnostic test. We launched our first centre in Gurgaon 2 years back and are very confident about the potential of our unique
approach to teaching students.
