You need a balance between controlling interruptions and staying informedWe teach what we allow Respect the time of others – if everyone treated others as they treat themselves – there would be unnecessary interruptionsDiscouraging drop in Visitors - Office Layout - Try closed door work sessionsLook at what causes interruptions Schedule a time to return calls When working on Project put calls on holdProcessed interrupts cause a loss of focus. It could be an incoming phone call, visitor or email. You may be in the middle of a process and stop to answer the phone. Instead of finishing the process you were working on the call may send you off in a different direction. Be aware of these interruptions and change in direction. Be sure to clearly note where you are in your process and GO BACK to finish what you started.Don’t take process interruptions lightly.Consider this: if you were at the bank, waiting in line for a teller and you got a phone call. Would you get out of line, leave the bank, handle the phone call and then drive back to the bank? Wouldn’t it make more sense to finish at the bank and then handle the next item? Be aware of your choices. Interruptions. Unanticipated events coming your way, in person or electronically, can steal your time away. Many interruptions are necessary and part of what you get paid for. However, most are unnecessary thieves of your time. Be less willing to automatically give away your time just because they demand it. Rather, determine whether or not they deserve it.A lifetime of allowing other peoples requests to take precedence over our own wants and needs is not an easy habit to break. Our time is as valuable as the next person’s. It is our time. And we are the ones responsible for it’s use.
