1. Review Week 2 Strategies to
Unlock Texts
GRADE 4, UNIT 4, WEEK 3, MINI-LESSON 2 (10 minutes)
2. Review Week 2 Strategies to Unlock Texts
I will be able to:
Participate in discussions by being prepared, following
discussion rules, asking and answering questions, and
reviewing key ideas.
Paraphrase content from reading.
Present ideas using formal English.
3. Engage Thinking
During Week 2 we practiced strategies to learn more
about point of view. We practiced the strategy of
writing a first person descriptive narrative by writing
from the point of view of Lad from ”Quiet!” in the setting
of “Waiting for Stormy.”
4. Engage Thinking
This week you will use thease and other strategies while
reading a longer selection “My Breaking In.” You will
compare the effectiveness of first and third person
narratives. First, reflect on the strategies you used last
week to learn about point of view.
5. Turn and Talk to Reflect on Strategies
Let’s move to small groups to discuss these questions about first person point of view:
What did you learn about Lad when writing from a first person point of view?
What did first person point of view reveal about the events and characters of “Waiting
for Stormy.”
What information is not revealed in a story told from a first person point of view?
Please be sure to record key ideas you learn during your discussion. After discussion, we
will paraphrase descriptions of Lad from “Quiet!” that you used in your writing.
6. Share
Call on individual students to present the key ideas from their group’s
discussion. Invite the class to discuss differences and similarities in the key
ideas among the groups. Use the share time to help students develop
metacognitive awareness about their reading and writing process. Ask
them to reflect as they read on what the first person narrative includes, as
well as what is left out.
7. Share
Discuss how a first person narrator can reveal more about his/her own
character by describing inner thoughts. Discuss how the first person point
of view may provide less information about other characters’ thoughts and
feelings, or about settings where the narrator is not present. Urge them to
use the Week 2 strategies about first person point of view as the read “My
Breaking In.”
Remind students to use formal English as they share their ideas and
participate in the discussion.
