3. What is a Digital Portfolio
• STUDENTS:
A
collection
of
work,
ideas
and
artifacts
to
represent
the
learning
process.
• TEACHERS:
A
collection
of
work,
ideas,
artifacts,
and
resources
to
share
with
students,
parents
and
other
teachers.
• Digital
portfolios
can
contain
images,
word
processing,
embedded,
and/or
multimedia
elements.

WHAT
DOES
THE
RESEARCH
SAY?
Research
shows
that
students
at
all
levels
see
assessment
as
something
that
is
done
to
them
on
their
classwork
by
someone
else.
Beyond
"percent
correct,"
assigned
le?er
grades,
and
gramma@cal
or
arithme@c
errors,
many
students
have
li?le
knowledge
of
what
is
involved
in
evalua@ng
their
classwork.
PorColios
can
provide
structure
for
involving
students
in
developing
and
understanding
criteria
for
good
efforts,
in
coming
to
see
the
criteria
as
their
own,
and
in
applying
the
criteria
to
their
own
and
other
students'
work.
Research
also
shows
that
students
benefit
from
an
awareness
of
the
processes
and
strategies
involved
in
wri@ng,
solving
a
problem,
researching
a
topic,
analyzing
informa@on,
or
describing
their
own
observa@ons.
Without
instruc@on
focused
on
the
processes
and
strategies
that
underlie
effec@ve
performance
of
these
types
of
work,
most
students
will
not
learn
them
or
will
learn
them
only
minimally.
And
without
curriculum-‐specific
experience
in
using
these
processes
and
strategies,
even
fewer
students
will
carry
them
forward
into
new
and
appropriate
contexts.
PorColios
can
serve
as
a
vehicle
for
enhancing
student
awareness
of
these
strategies
for
thinking
about
and
producing
work-‐-‐both
inside
and
beyond
the
classroom.

17. Adding Content to your Portfolio
Embed, don’t link when possible
Advantages
of
Embedding
• Information
is
dynamic
–
when
the
original
changes,
your
widget
in
your
portfolio
changes
as
well.
• Never
leave
the
site
–
because
embed
makes
your
element
a
part
of
the
website,
your
viewers
never
have
to
leave.
• Embedding
makes
a
website
come
alive.
It
is
not
so
text-‐heavy.
What
is
embedding?
Embedding
is
when
you
take
one
Web
2.0
tool
and
incorporate
it
into
another
Web
2.0
tool.
Your
embedded
tool
is
referred
to
as
a
widget.
Although
embedding
is
easy,
it
can
be
in@mida@ng
because
you
copy
and
paste
programming
code.

The

This
is
an
alternative
you

in

you
