Buses and other forms of public transportation can tell the story of the Civil Rights movement in the United States. Segregated seating on streetcars and buses reflected the discrimination faced by racial minorities in society at the time. The 1961 Freedom Rides tested the Supreme Court's ruling banning discrimination in public transportation, sparking violence in protest. Today the Seashore Trolley Museum shares this history through exhibits like their 1964 DC Transit Bus to promote the message that there is a seat for everyone on public transportation regardless of race.
