The Liturgy of the Word
First Reading
A Reading From The Prophet Jeremiah (1:4-9)
Now the word of the Lord came to me saying, "Before I formed you in the womb I
knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to
the nations.” Then I said, “Ah, Lord God! Behold, I do not know how to speak, for I
am only a youth.” But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am only a youth’; for to all
to whom I send you shall go, and whatever I command you shall speak. Be not
afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, says the Lord”. Then the Lord put
forth his hand and touched my mouth; and the Lord said to me, “Behold, I have put
my words in your mouth”.
The word of the Lord.
All: Thanks be to God.
5. Responsorial Psalm ♫ (Cotter) ♫
Response: You open wide your hand, O Lord, and grant our desires.
1. All your creatures shall thank you, O Lord,
and your friends shall repeat their blessing.
They shall speak of the glory of your reign
and declare your might, O God.
2. The eyes of all creatures look to you
and you give them their food in due time.
You open wide your hand,
grant the desires of all who live.
3. The Lord is just in all his ways
and loving in all his deeds.
He is close to all who call him,
who call on him from their hearts.
Second Reading
A Reading From The First Letter Of St Paul To The Corinthians
(1 Cor. 12:4-7, 12-13)
Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Sprit; and there are varieties of service,
but the same Lord; and there are varieties of working, but it is the same God who
inspires them all in every one. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for
the common good. For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the
members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For by one
Spirit we were all baptized into one body – Jews or Greeks, slaves or free – and all
were made to drink one spirit.
The word of the Lord.
All: Thanks be to God.
Gospel Acclamation ♫ (McDonagh) ♫
Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia
Your words are spirit Lord, and they are life, you have the message of eternal life.
Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia
6. Gospel
Fr Jim: The Lord be with you.
All: And with your spirit.
Fr Jim: A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew (13 : 1-9)
All: Glory to you, O Lord.
That same day, Jesus left the house and sat by the lakeside, but such crowds gathered
round him that he got into a boat and sat there. The people all stood on the beach,
and he told them many things in parables. He said, “Imagine a sower going out to
sow. As he sowed, some seeds fell on the edge of the path, and the birds came and
ate them up. Others fell on patches of rock where they found little soil and sprang
up straight away, because there was no depth of earth; but as soon as the sun came up
they were scorched and, not having any roots, they withered away. Others fell
among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Others fell on rich soil
and produced their crop, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Listen,
anyone who has ears!”.
The Gospel of the Lord.
All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
Homily
7. Prayers of the Faithful
Fr Jim: Let us pray that our faith in Christ may be both pure and strong and that
we may follow him with courage and generosity.
1. For our church: that it may always proclaim the message of Christ in our
World.
Lord, hear us.
All: Lord, graciously hear us.
2. For Fr Jim on his Silver Jubilee. We give thanks this evening for his
service to the Church and his constant dedication to the priesthood of
Christ. Lord protect him with your continued love and care.
Lord, hear us.
All: Lord, graciously hear us.
3. For priesthood: We pray for all priests who serve Christ in our diocese.
We pray that many more may hear the call of Jesus to, “Come Follow Me”
and answer his call with faith and love.
Lord, hear us.
All: Lord, graciously hear us.
4. For our parish of Carraroe. Lord, help us to keep our vision clear and
our goal in mind, so that even now we may experience the joy and inner
peace that comes from being faithful.
Lord, hear us.
All: Lord, graciously hear us.
5. For peace in our world. We pray for peace in our world, that governments
and leaders in our world will work for the rights and needs of all people.
Lord, hear us.
All: Lord, graciously hear us.
6. Lord Hear us
For all our faithful departed: We pray especially for family and friends
who have parted from this world. Lord receive them into your heavenly
home.
Lord, hear us.
All: Lord, graciously hear us.
Fr Jim: Lord, you taught us to care for one another and you set us an example.
Help us to live up to your calling as we place all our prayers before you
this day. We ask this through Christ Our Lord.
8. The Liturgy Of The Eucharist
Offertory Hymn: ♫ Taste & See (Kendzia)
Presentation Of The Gifts
Fr Jim: Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we
have received the bread we offer you: fruit of the earth and work of
human hands, it will become for us the bread of life.
All: Blessed be God forever.
Fr Jim: Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we
have received the wine we offer you: fruit of the vine and work of human
hands, it will become our spiritual drink.
All: Blessed be God forever.
Fr Jim: Pray, brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable
to God, the almighty Father.
All: May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and
glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church.
Prayer Over The Offerings
Fr Jim: Accept O Lord, we pray, the offerings which we bring from the abundance
of your gifts, that through the powerful working of your grace these most
sacred mysteries may sanctify our presence way of life and lead us to
eternal gladness. Through Christ our
Lord.
All: Amen.
Fr Jim: The Lord be with you.
All: And with your spirit.
Fr Jim: Lift up your hearts.
All: We lift them up to the Lord.
Fr Jim: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
All: It is right and just.
It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give
you thanks, Lord, Holy Father, almighty and eternal God. For by the anointing of
the Holy Spirit you made your only begotten Son high priest of the new and eternal
covenant, and by your wonderful design we are pleased to decree that his one
priesthood should continue in the Church.
9. For Christ not only adorns with a royal priesthood the people he has made his own,
but with a brother's kindness he also chooses men to become sharers in his sacred
ministry through the laying on of hands. They are to renew in his name the sacrifice
of human redemption, to set before your children the paschal banquet, to lead your
people in charity, to nourish them with your word, and strengthen them with the
sacraments.
As they give up their lives for you and for the salvation of their brothers and sisters,
they strive to be conformed to the image of Christ himself and offer to you a constant
witness of faith and love. And so, Lord, with the Angels and Saints, we, too, give
thanks, as in exultation we acclaim:
♫ Sung ♫
Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of your glory,
Hosanna, Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna, Hosanna in the highest Blessed is
he who comes in the name of the Lord, Hosanna, Hosanna in the highest,
Hosanna, Hosanna in the highest.
Eucharistic Prayer III
You are indeed Holy, O Lord, and all you have
created rightly gives you praise, for through your
Son our Lord Jesus Christ, by the power and
working of the Holy Spirit, you give life to all
things and make them holy, and you never cease
to gather a people to yourself, so that from the
rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may
be offered to your name.
Therefore, O Lord, we humbly implore you: by
the same Spirit graciously make holy these gifts
we have brought to you for consecration, that
they may become the Body and Blood of your
Son our Lord Jesus Christ, at whose command we
celebrate these mysteries.
For on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread, and, giving you thanks, he
said the blessing, broke the bread and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take this, all of
you, and eat of it, for this is my Body, which will be given up for you.
In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice, and, giving you thanks,
he said the blessing, and gave the chalice to his disciples, saying: Take this, all of you,
and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my Blood, the Blood of the new and eternal
covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Do this in memory of me.
10. The Mystery Of Faith ♫ Sung ♫
When we eat this Bread, When we drink this Cup, we proclaim your Death, O
Lord, until you come again.
Therefore, O Lord, as we celebrate the memorial of the saving Passion of your Son, his
wondrous Resurrection and Ascension into heaven, and as we look forward to his
second coming, we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice.
Look, we pray, upon the oblation of your Church and, recognizing the sacrificial
Victim by whose death you willed to reconcile us to yourself, grant that we, who are
nourished by the Body and Blood of your Son and filled with his Holy Spirit, may
become one body, one spirit in Christ.
May he make of us an eternal offering to you, so that we may obtain an inheritance
with your elect, especially with the most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with
your blessed Apostles and glorious Martyrs and with all the Saints, on whose constant
intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help.
May this Sacrifice of our reconciliation, we pray, O Lord, advance the peace and
salvation of all the world. Be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim
Church on earth, with your servant Francis our Pope and Kevin our Bishop, the Order
of Bishops, all the clergy, and the entire people you have gained for your own.
Listen graciously to the prayers of this family, whom you have summoned before you:
in your compassion, O merciful Father, gather to yourself all your children scattered
throughout the world.
11. To our departed brothers and sisters and to all who were pleasing to you at their
passing from this life, give kind admittance to your kingdom. There we hope to
enjoy for ever the fullness of your glory through Christ our Lord, through whom you
bestow on the world all that is good.
Through him, and with him, and in him,
O God, almighty Father,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
all glory and honour is yours,
for ever and ever.
All: Amen.
The Communion Rite
Fr Jim: At the Saviour's command together we pray:
All: Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against
us; and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Fr Jim: Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our
days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin
and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of
our Savior, Jesus Christ
All: For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever.
Fr Jim: Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your Apostles: Peace I leave you, my peace I
give you; look not on our sins, but on the faith of your Church, and graciously
grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will. Who live and reign for
ever and ever.
All: Amen.
12. Fr Jim: The peace of the Lord be with you always.
All: And with your spirit.
Fr Jim: Let us offer each other the sign of peace.
Lamb Of God ♫ Sung ♫
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, grant us peace.
Fr Jim: Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the
world.
Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.
All: Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only
say the word and my soul shall be healed.
Communion Hymn
♫ Here I Am Lord (Schutte) ♫
1. I the Lord of sea and sky
I have heard my people cry
All who dwell in dark and sin
My hand will save
I who made the stars of night
I will make their darkness bright
Who will bear my light to them?
Whom shall I send?
Here I am Lord, is it I Lord?
I have heard -- You calling in the night
I will go Lord, if You lead me
I will hold Your people in my heart
2. I, the Lord of snow and rain
I have borne My people’s pain
I have wept for love of them
They turn away
I will break their hearts of stone
Give them hearts for love alone
Who will speak My Word to them?
Whom shall I send?
13. 3. I the Lord of wind and flame
I will tend the poor and lame
I will set a feast for them
My hand will save
Finest bread I will provide
Till their hearts are satisfied
I will give My Life to them
Whom shall I send?
♫ Increase Our Faith (Haas) ♫
Communion Reflection
“The Work Of Christ”
To do the work of Christ is not a complicated thing. It’s really quiet simple.
It means to be faithful in little things,
for to be faithful in little things is a big thing.
It means to do one's task, no matter how humble it may be,
not only thoroughly but joyfully.
It means to make oneself available, yet never to seek the limelight.
It means to make oneself useful, without seeking to push oneself.
It means to strive to remain calm, amid the hustle and bustle of life.
It means to carry one's burden, without, as far as possible, becoming a burden on
others.
In a word it means to be at one's post, helpful and faithful, loyal and constant.
As Mother Teresa Says:
"We can do no great things - only little things with great love.
You can do what I can't do. I can do what you can't do.
Together we can do something beautiful for God."
14. Prayer After Communion
Fr Jim: May the divine sacrifice we have offered and receive, O Lord, give new life
to your priests, and to all your faithful, that, united to you in unfailing
love, they may receive the grace of giving worthy service to your majesty.
Through Christ Our Lord.
All: Amen.
The Concluding Rites
Fr Jim: The Lord be with you
All: And with your spirit.
Fr Jim: May the God of all consolation order your days in his peace and grant you
the gifts of his blessings.
All: Amen.
Fr Jim: May he free you always from every distress and confirm you hearts in his
love.
All: Amen.
Fr Jim: So that on this life’s journey you may be effective in good works rich in
the gifts of hope, faith and charity, and may come happily to eternal life.
All: Amen.
Fr Jim: And may the blessing of almighty God, the Father, and the Son, and the
Holy Spirit, come down on you and remain with you forever.
All: Amen.
Fr Jim: Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.
All: Thanks be to God.
15. Recessional ♫ May The Road Rise To Meet You (True) ♫
Prayer For Our Parish
O God, you have made us the church of your dear Son. Make our parish a family of
one heart and mind in love towards you. Grant that our common life and work may
be an example to all about us. Guide our priest Fr Jim and all who work in our
parish. Acknowledge the intercessions of St John the Evangelist, our patron; and
keep us secure in your love. Amen
May the road rise to meet you
May the wind be at your back
May the sun shine warm upon your face
May the rain fall softly on your fields
And until we meet again
May you keep safe in the gentle
loving arms of God
