This document discusses new learning communities and connectivism as a learning theory for the digital age. It defines a learning ecosystem as a framework that incorporates tools and multiple touch points to support learners. New learning communities can help learners become more self-directed, critical thinkers who can collaborate. Strategies for new learning communities include modeling tools, providing tutorials, and using various phases of engagement.
7. Connectivism is: "a learning theory for the digital age” Though some argue, not a theory but rather a viewpoint… Check out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Connectivism_%28learning_theory%29#cite_note-idtl-0 Connectivism: A Learning Theory for the Digital Age, International Journal of Instructional Technology and Distance Learning, Vol. 2 No. 1, Jan 2005 digital age,"
8. Learning Ecosystem is: A way to make sense out of the chaos! “A learning ecosystem is a framework for understanding new learning environments that incorporate a variety of tools (ie: course management systems, Web 2.0 applications) and multiple touch points (web, client, mobile) that aims to make transparent to the members of the learning community various channels (relationships, pathways, protocols) in support of learners (who learn in a variety of contexts) as facilitated by a master learner who models the strategies of how to use the channels.” Holly Rae Bemis-Schurtz http://newlearningcommunities.pbworks.com/Learning-Ecosystems-for-New-Learning-Communities

Principles of connectivismLearning and knowledge rests in diversity of opinions.Learning is a process of connecting specialized nodes or information sources.Learning may reside in non-human appliances.Capacity to know more is more critical than what is currently knownNurturing and maintaining connections is needed to facilitate continual learning.Ability to see connections between fields, ideas, and concepts is a core skill.Currency (accurate, up-to-date knowledge) is the intent of all connectivist learning activities.Decision-making is itself a learning process. Choosing what to learn and the meaning of incoming information is seen through the lens of a shifting reality. While there is a right answer now, it may be wrong tomorrow due to alterations in the information climate affecting the decision.[3][edit]
Applying the term of “ecosystem” is important, as it has been recently used in relation to information (Gore, 2008), the Internet and Web 2.0 (Johnson, 2005), and eLearning (Dillon & Hallet, 2001; Kumar, Groenboer, Chu, Jamieson-Noel, & Xin, 2007).
