10 TIPS TO SAVE ENERGY (AND MONEY)
IN YOUR HOME
A whopping 55 percent of homes can Reduce
energy use is, umm, energy loss!
In other words, no productive energy use at all!
Here are simple ways of reversing this, mostly by
changes of habits.

Air Conditioner : With just a few small changes,
om
you can relax in comfort this summer while saving some cold cold, hard cash Each degree you turn down the heat saves 3 percent of heating costs, while each degree you raise
the temperature of your air conditioner saves 3-4 percent of cooling costs. By changing the
temperature by 2 degrees all year, you can save about 2,000 pounds of C02 a year.Split

This summer, instead of blasting the air conditioner (and blowing your electricity bills through
the roof), you can take simple actions that will help you beat the heat. For example,
replacing a dirty, clogged air filter with a clean one can lower your air conditioner’s energy
consumption by 5 15 percent while using a ceiling fan will allow you to raise the thermostat
m home page : http
5-percent, setting about 4 degrees without impacting your comfort.
COOLING TIPS
Set your thermostat at as high a temperature as comfortably possible in the summer, and ensure humidity
: care@care‐india.com
control if needed. The smaller the difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures, the lower your
overall cooling bill will be.
Avoid setting your thermostat at a colder setting than normal when you turn on your air conditioner. It will not
cool your home any faster and could result in excessive cooling and, therefore, unnecessary expense.
Consider using an interior fan along with your window air conditioner to spread the cooled air through your
email
home without greatly increasing your power use.
Avoid placing appliances that give off heat such as lamps or TVs near a thermostat

uses 0.9 pounds of C02 for seven hours, a toaster oven takes 1.3 pounds of
C02 for 50 minutes, and a microwave only 0.5 pounds of C02 for 15
minutes of cooking cooking. A solar cooker requires NO C02!

DESK TOPS AND LAPTOPS om
3. Switch to a laptop instead of using a desktop computer and cut three-quarters off

If you must use a Desktop then change the monitor to an LCD or LED screen and save

So you save 300W by running a laptop. If you pay `7/ kWh in India So that's `7 / hr.
So how many hours a day do you use your laptop?
: care@care‐india.com
Let's say you're a business and you are thinking about taking away your employees'
desktops and giving them laptops (in reality, you'd probably give them monitors and
docking stations, but we'll let that go...) so they'll run about 9 hours a day. So that's `

4. WASHING MACHINES : care@care‐india.com home page : http://www.care‐india.com
4. Switch to cold water washing and save 80 percent on energy used for
laundry and save an estimated $650 a year. Hang dry your clothes instead of
using the dryer and save 700 pounds of C02 a year.

Schedule your laundry
The low-water washing machines on the market today are able to cut your
water use by as much 70 percent! That money-saving figure should get your
attention, whether you’re particularly environmentally conscious or not!

5. PLUG IN AND SWITCH OFF : care@care‐india.com home page : http://www.care‐india.com
Plug anything that can be powered by a remote control or that
has a power cube transformer (little black box) into a power strip,
and turn it off, and/or when not in use. (Power cubes are

unplug, 60-80 percent inefficient.)

6. TURN OFF THE LIGHTS
reduce your direct lighting energy use by 45 percent. om
Stop using heat-producing halogen lamps (they can also be fire hazards).
Install occupancy or motion sensors on outdoor lights. LED’s Compared to
traditional incandescents, energy-efficient lightbulbs such as halogen
://www.care‐india.co
energy incandescents, compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), and light emitting diodes
(LEDs) have the following advantages:
Typically use about 25%-80% less energy than traditional incandescents,
saving you money
m home page : http
Can last 3-25 times longer.
Today's energy-efficient bulbs are available in the wide range of colors and
light levels you've come to expect. While the initial price of energy-efficient
bulbs is typically higher than incandescents newer bulbs cost
: care@care‐india.com
traditional incandescents, less to operate, saving you money over the life of the bulb. Many of the
newer bulbs last significantly longer than traditional bulbs, so you won't
need to replace them as often

fairly simple and inexpensive, and it will pay for itself in about a year.
Insulating an electric water heater tank
You can probably install an insulating pre cut jacket or blanket on your electric

pre-water heater tank yourself. Read and follow the directions carefully. Leave the
thermostat access panel(s) uncovered. Don't set the thermostat above 130ºF on
electric water heater with an insulating jacket or blanket – the wiring may
overheat.
