15. A Haunted House
In the middle of the countryside, very near our village there is a
deserted house which has been abandoned for ages. The old
people of our village tell many stories about it and they all believe it is inhabited by
ghosts. Some years ago, my friends and I decided to see if these tales were true.
We packed our backpacks, took our sleeping bags and headed to the
haunted house. We planned to spend the night there. We arrived at the house at
11pm. The big iron gate was not locked so we pushed it open. It made a loud creek
which made us shiver all over. We all put on our torches as it was pitch dark. We
entered through the main door and headed to the living room. The house was
furnished but there was dust and cobwebs all over the place. We put our bags down
and went to explore the other rooms. As we were climbing up the stairs we heard
the door of one of the rooms upstairs slam shut. We all shrieked, ran down again to
the living room and locked ourselves in there. We decided to stay there,
comfortably in our sleeping bags but the grandfather clock in the room soon struck
midnight. We heard footsteps going down the stairs... Then the door opened... It
closed again... The fireplace lit on its own! We were so frightened that we couldn’t
move. Then the window broke open and a gust of wind howled and whirled inside
the room and made us scream our heart out. We packed up everything, jumped out
of the window and ran as fast as we could back home.
By 12.30am I was buried under the covers of my bed trembling all over. This
was the last time I went near the house and have no intension whatsoever to go
there ever again!
