Organizing Life’s Diversity.Level of classification & Binomial nomenclature By: Candace Taylor
Classification! Biologist organize organisms by using classification (The grouping of objects or information based on similarities.)
Taxonomy! The branch of biology that groups and names organism based on studies on their different characteristics. Biologists who study this are called Taxonomists.
Aristotle’s system The Greek philosopher (384-322 B.C.) developed the first widely accepted system of biological classification. Classifying two groups : plants and animals.
Linnaeus's system! The Swedish botanist (1707-1778) developed a method of grouping organisms that is still used today. Which is based on physical and structural similarities of organisms.
Binomial nomenclature! The first word identifies the genus of the organism. A genus consist of a group of similar species.
The second word describes a characteristic of the organism and is called the specific epithet. Making it a combination between the two.
Latin The language of scientific names. Latin is used because not many people speak Latin anymore. Scientific names are written in idolized print or underlined when written.
Fun Fact: Living things are classified by their external and internal structures of an organism.
